Across the forested belts and the Aravalli range in Rajasthan, illegal mining networks have demonstrated an escalating disregard for the rule of law, targeting uniformed enforcement personnel with lethal aggression. The most tragic manifestation of this hostility occurred in the Chhotisadri area of Pratapgarh district, where Forest Ranger Pratap Singh was deliberately run over by a dumper while acting against unauthorized soil excavation. Although he was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, medical personnel were unable to save his life.
Fatal Encounter During Chhotisadri Sand Excavation Check
The tragedy unfolded after the forest administration received specific intelligence regarding unapproved soil extraction and illicit vehicular transport in Chhotisadri. In response, a departmental squad headed by Ranger Pratap Singh mobilized to intercept the illegal operation. As the officials attempted to seize the machinery and halt the activity, the dumper driver accelerated straight toward the ranger, crushing him under the heavy vehicle. The killing has sent shockwaves through the department and exposed the extreme perils faced by field teams safeguarding public lands.
Alwar Confrontation: Attack on Guards and Theft of Credentials
The incident in Pratapgarh is part of an alarming pattern documented across the state. Earlier this year in April, a violent ambush occurred at Sahadi village within the Kathumar sub-division of Alwar district. Acting on actionable intelligence concerning illicit stone trafficking, Regional Forest Officer Ravi Singh Bhati led a squad to intercept a tractor-trolley laden with unauthorized stones. When signalled to stop, driver Shyam Gurjar attempted to speed away before being chased down and intercepted by the personnel.
While officers were interrogating the driver, he placed a phone call to his associates. Within a short span, Satveer Gurjar arrived at the scene accompanied by four to five accomplices, immediately launching an aggressive assault using bricks and stones. During the melee, forest guard Ramveer Singh was physically assaulted, struck with stones, and robbed of his official government identity card, mobile phone, and cash. The assailants then forcibly fled with the intercepted tractor-trolley. Forest authorities noted that these syndicates operate an organized local informant network that tracks enforcement movements in real time.
Ambush in Jhunjhunu: Seized Equipment Reclaimed at Gunpoint
A similar confrontation took place in the Khetri sector of Jhunjhunu. Receiving night-time alerts about extraction activities in the Aravalli hills of Devta Tatija, Ranger Mukesh Meena proceeded to the location with his squad, successfully seizing an active JCB and a tractor. However, the operation was quickly interrupted when armed operators, identified as Sheeshram Gurjar, Naresh Gurjar, and their aides, arrived on site and forcibly reclaimed both impounded vehicles.
As the forest team attempted to retreat safely toward Kuthania village in the Singhana area, suspects riding in a Bolero intercepted them by blocking the road ahead. The attackers vandalized official patrol vehicles and drove toward Ranger Mukesh Meena in an attempt to crush him. Armed with iron rods, clubs, and weapons, the mob inflicted severe injuries on Forester Shahrukh Khan and Assistant Forester Satyawan, both of whom had to be hospitalized with serious lacerations and trauma.
Vehicle Ramming in Baran and the Multi-Agency Crackdown
In Baran district's Chhipabarod region, a patrol unit inspecting reports of illicit stone extraction and illegal collection of tendu leaves encountered similar defiance. Near a temple in Barawada village, officials spotted a suspicious tractor and ordered it to halt. Rather than complying, the driver deliberately attempted to ram the government vehicle head-on before speeding away. The collision shattered the patrol vehicle's glass windows and injured two forest personnel, prompting an official criminal complaint at the Chhipabarod police station.
Following this brazen resistance, a coordinated operation was launched by police and mining officials across Surtak and Kishanganj. Raids yielded the confiscation of three LNT Poclain machines, two JCBs, four tractors, two riverboats, one dumper, and a motorcycle. The seizure of riverboats and heavy machinery dismantled an active waterborne transport channel, causing widespread disarray among local operators.
Statewide Crackdown: Over 552 Operations and Financial Penalties
In response to recurring threats against field officials, the state mines department and allied agencies initiated an extensive enforcement drive. The campaign resulted in more than 552 operational actions against unauthorized mining syndicates. Authorities registered 76 First Information Reports (FIRs) and arrested 17 individuals connected to illicit networks, alongside the seizure of 512 vehicles and heavy apparatus including excavators, JCBs, and cranes.
The administrative drive also extracted over Rs 2 crore 88 lakh in monetary penalties, directly deposited into the government treasury. Enforcement measures remain primarily focused on the ecologically vulnerable Aravalli belt and adjacent sensitive districts, where repeated violations continue to pose significant regulatory and environmental challenges.
