Selling pressure intensified sharply against the US Dollar in foreign exchange trading, pushing the currency down significantly against the Swiss Franc. The USD/CHF pair concluded its latest session down 0.80% at 0.8184 after tumbling to an intraday trough of 0.8174. Technical observations from United Overseas Bank (UOB) analysts Quek Ser Leang and Lee Sue Ann highlight that this abrupt downward acceleration has brought crucial support thresholds into immediate focus, opening the path toward 0.8165 and potentially 0.8140.
Technical Outlook for the Dollar and Franc
The sudden downturn caught market expectations off balance. On Friday, 30 October, when the pair changed hands near 0.8240, analysts noted a slight build in negative momentum but anticipated that any depreciation would remain confined inside a 0.8190 to 0.8290 corridor. That session had seen the Dollar hit a low of 0.8191 before staging a rebound to finish at 0.8250. Subsequent intraday assessments pointed toward flattening momentum indicators and favored range-bound oscillation between 0.8225 and 0.8270. Instead, sharp selling drove the spot rate down to 0.8174.
Looking at the immediate 24-hour horizon, technical conditions indicate that the Dollar could dip beneath the primary support benchmark at 0.8165. However, because price indicators reflect deeply oversold readings, sustaining moves below 0.8165 may prove difficult. Under this setup, secondary support at 0.8140 appears unlikely to come into play right away. On the recovery side, upside attempts face resistance near 0.8200, followed by a firmer cap at 0.8220. Over a broader one to three-week timeframe, downward pressure is accumulating rapidly. To keep this negative momentum intact, the Dollar must stay underneath the strong resistance boundary placed at 0.8255.
RBA Rate Decision Triggers Australian Dollar Pullback
Broader currency trading across Asia also witnessed meaningful realignments. The Australian Dollar (AUD/USD) weakened for a second consecutive session on Tuesday, touching a fresh two-week low following the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) rate decision. While the central bank delivered an expected 25 basis point hike, the policy committee proved divided, as three board members voted to keep the official cash rate unchanged at 4.60%. That visible division dialed back investor expectations for further monetary tightening, which, paired with modest baseline strength in the US Dollar, dragged the currency pair lower.
Japanese Yen Rangebound Amid Election Watch
Against the Japanese Yen, USD/JPY retreated slightly during Asian trading hours, relinquishing a slice of its prior climb toward 158.00. The US Dollar experienced broad friction alongside ongoing diplomatic possibilities involving Iran and heightened caution ahead of Tuesday's voting in the United States. While lingering concerns over potential official intervention provided underlying support for the Yen, unclear timing surrounding when the Bank of Japan (BoJ) will enact its next interest rate increase capped additional gains. This tug-of-war has confined the pair to familiar trading boundaries, encouraging market participants to exercise caution before establishing clear directional positions.
Gold Softens Under Robust Factory Data
Precious metals mirrored the shifting sentiment, as spot gold drifted lower beneath $3,950 an ounce during Tuesday's Asian hours. The retreat reversed a portion of Monday's bounce from a one-year low reached last week. Selling resumed after data confirmed steady domestic industrial expansion in the United States, marking a 10th consecutive month of factory growth in October. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Manufacturing PMI rose to 55.5 from 54.5 in September, beating consensus expectations. Strong factory performance reinforced views that the Federal Reserve will maintain a firm stance, while rising US Treasury yields placed additional downward pressure on non-yielding bullion.
Cardano Under Technical Pressure
In digital asset markets, Cardano (ADA) continued its ongoing downward correction, changing hands below $0.189 on Tuesday after surrendering a vital technical support zone the day prior. Divergent derivatives metrics alongside restrained on-chain activity weighed on market confidence, with deteriorating technical oscillators pointing toward sustained downside exposure for ADA.
US Midterm Balloting Underway
These financial adjustments coincide with major political events as voters in the United States cast ballots on Tuesday for the midterm elections. The contest features races for approximately one-third of the Senate seats along with all 435 voting districts in the House of Representatives. In addition, special elections are taking place in Florida and Ohio to fill seats previously occupied by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance, adding an element of political anticipation across global trading desks.
