Making online transactions without an internet connection is now a reality for feature phone users through PhonePe and its UPI 123Pay service. This newly introduced feature eliminates the necessity of internet access for digital payments on basic mobile handsets, making financial transactions accessible to millions of users across the country who do not rely on smartphones.
Expanding Digital Payments to Millions of Basic Phones
By rolling out this offline payment capability, PhonePe becomes the first major third-party application provider to extend UPI services to India's base of over 200 million feature phone users. The service is designed to bridge the digital divide by allowing people in areas with limited connectivity to participate in seamless financial transfers directly from their standard mobile devices.
Device Partnerships and SMS-Based Technology
The offline UPI payment service will come pre-bundled on devices from Nokia, HMD, Lava International, and Itel Mobile-Transsion Holdings, with several other handset manufacturers preparing to partner with PhonePe to integrate the feature. The platform relies on a robust SMS-based architecture, ensuring that transactions go through successfully even in regions plagued by limited 2G connectivity, while offering smooth peer-to-peer transfers via mobile numbers or UPI IDs.
Account Management and Future Capabilities
Beyond simple money transfers, feature phone users can utilize the platform to manage their accounts, check account balances, and view past transaction histories. Upcoming updates are scheduled to introduce advanced capabilities previously absent from basic handsets, including utility bill payments, recharges, and Aadhaar-based onboarding onto the UPI ecosystem. Sameer Nigam, Founder and CEO of PhonePe, noted that bringing UPI to feature phones extends the benefits of digital transactions far beyond smartphones to every corner of the nation.
