The Bihar state cabinet has granted administrative approval for a major infrastructure project aimed at transforming road connectivity across the region. Under this project, a 336 km long 6-lane greenfield expressway will be constructed connecting the western district of Buxar to Bhagalpur in the east. Currently, commuting between these two key commercial and cultural hubs takes anywhere from 10 to 12 hours by road. Once the new corridor becomes fully operational, travel time is expected to drop significantly to just 4 to 5 hours. In addition to providing seamless transit for everyday passengers, the expressway is slated to deliver a substantial economic boost to regional trade and industry.
Direct Road Link Connecting 13 Bihar Districts
The proposed 6-lane corridor will pass through 13 districts of Bihar, namely Buxar, Bhojpur, Arwal, Jehanabad, Gaya, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Munger, Nawada, Jamui, Banka, and Bhagalpur. Residents of these districts will gain direct access to faster, safer, and high-quality road infrastructure. A strategic highlight of the alignment is its integration with the Purvanchal Expressway at Buxar. This vital junction will enable seamless traffic movement coming from Delhi and Lucknow to pass smoothly through Bihar and reach West Bengal as well as northeastern states without facing regional bottlenecks.
Access-Controlled Engineering for High-Speed Transit
Designed as a modern access-controlled highway, the route will eliminate traditional traffic intersections and signal stops. Vehicles will enter and exit the expressway strictly through designated grade-separated interchanges built at strategic locations. By keeping local traffic separate and removing frequent stops, the facility will allow motor vehicles to maintain consistent high speeds safely. This engineering setup is the primary factor that will help curtail the current 10 to 12 hour journey down to a swift 4 to 5 hour drive.
Major River Bridges and Local Transit Infrastructure
Spanning 336 km across diverse geographical terrain, the expressway alignment crosses several major rivers in the state, including the Son, Punpun, Falgu, and Kiul. Substantial long-span bridges will be built across these water bodies to carry the 6-lane carriageway. To preserve local connectivity and prevent community severance, the project plan includes multiple interchanges, flyovers, overbridges, and underpasses at intersections with existing village roads and state highways.
Industrial Hubs, Logistics Parks, and Regional Job Growth
Authorities view the greenfield expressway as more than just a transportation corridor. Comprehensive development plans call for setting up industrial hubs, specialized economic zones, and logistics parks along the route. Improved freight mobility will streamline the movement of raw materials to manufacturing units and facilitate the transport of finished products to markets in neighbouring states. The resulting wave of industrial investment is anticipated to generate extensive direct and indirect employment opportunities across eastern Bihar.
Execution via PPP Model and DPR Formulation
The mega infrastructure project will be executed using the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Following the formal approval from the state cabinet, work has commenced on formulating the Detailed Project Report (DPR). The DPR process will establish precise alignment details, land acquisition metrics, and project costing prior to initiating the formal tendering and construction phases.
