In Dilawarpur village under the Mohammadi tehsil of Lakhimpur district, local farmers are turning traditional crops into profitable ventures. Waseem Khan, a resident farmer of Dilawarpur, has undertaken commercial-scale cultivation of snap melon, locally known as phoot kakdi, utilizing the elevated trellis technique to boost crop returns.
Rising Monsoon Demand and Unique Ripening Traits
As standard vegetable supplies fluctuate during heavy rains, the demand for snap melon surges significantly across regional markets. A distinctive feature of this produce is that the fruit naturally splits open upon full maturity. Because of this self-cleaving characteristic, it is locally referred to as 'phoot'. The fruit offers a uniquely balanced mildly sweet and sour taste. In rural communities, it is consumed in multiple traditional ways, frequently served in sliced form paired with sugar or jaggery.
Low Input Costs and Efficient Land Utilization
Snap melon cultivation does not demand vast agricultural acreage. Smallholder farmers can easily initiate its planting on a modest section of their existing landholding. Requiring minimal initial investment, the crop thrives quickly when supported by timely irrigation, routine crop care, and proper vine structural support. Farmer Waseem Khan is currently growing phoot kakdi across approximately two acres of land in Dilawarpur village. He notes that steady yields ensure straightforward sales in nearby markets without requiring extensive distribution logistics.
Local Market Pricing Ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 60 per Piece
Regarding financial realization, Waseem Khan stated that individual pieces fetch between Rs 20 and Rs 60 in local markets. The final price varies depending on fruit dimensions, physical quality, market conditions, and immediate consumer demand. Well-developed fruits featuring clean outer skins are picked up rapidly by buyers, ensuring prompt cash liquidity for the grower.
Crop Protection and Quality Enhancements via Trellis Framework
To shield the crop from soil moisture and pest damage, Waseem Khan implemented the elevated trellis method (machan technique) instead of allowing the vines to spread naturally across the ground. Under this vertical system, creeping vines are trained upward onto elevated support structures made of posts and wires. This configuration maintains continuous airflow through the canopy and keeps developing fruits clear of damp soil.
Elaborating on the technical advantages, the farmer highlighted that keeping fruits suspended above the ground prevents mud accumulation on the rind. This elevation significantly reduces ground rot and minimizes insect infestations. Furthermore, the raised framework simplifies routine field operations, plant inspection, and the systematic harvesting of mature produce.
