The full inquiry report into the cash recovery controversy involving Justice Yashwant Varma will be formally tabled in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, closing a long wait since the panel wrapped up its findings months ago. According to the Lok Sabha's business list for the day, the Secretary General will lay the report on the table of the House in two volumes. The document is the very same report that the inquiry committee had already handed over to the Lok Sabha Speaker back in May, though it had not yet been placed before Parliament in an official sitting.
How the three-member panel came together
The controversy erupted after a large quantity of cash was allegedly discovered at Justice Varma's official government residence in Delhi. Given the seriousness of the allegations, the Speaker set up a three-member inquiry committee on August 12, 2025, tasked with examining the circumstances around the cash recovery and establishing the facts of the case. It is this committee's findings that are now being tabled in Parliament.
Firefighters found burnt notes in a storeroom
The episode traces back to the night of March 14, 2025, when a fire broke out at Justice Varma's official residence. Firefighters called in to douse the blaze allegedly found a large quantity of burnt currency notes stacked in a storeroom on the premises, a discovery that quickly turned the matter into a national controversy and raised uncomfortable questions about accountability within the judiciary.
Resignation leaves impeachment proceedings moot
In the aftermath, Justice Varma was moved out of the Delhi High Court and sent back to the Allahabad High Court, where he had previously served as a judge. He subsequently resigned, a move that rendered the impeachment proceedings initiated against him in Parliament effectively ineffective. For a judge facing corruption allegations, resignation was the only way left to halt the parliamentary removal process once it was set in motion. Notably, the Law Ministry has still not issued a formal notification confirming his resignation. Under the normal schedule, Justice Varma was due to retire only on January 5, 2031.
