A Jaish-e-Mohammed operative has been arrested in Bardhaman, West Bengal. Investigators say the man was involved in a plot to assassinate Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and was continuously sending his live location to handlers based in Kashmir.
How the plot came to light
Security agencies took the suspect into custody from Bardhaman. According to investigators, he was looking to target Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and was constantly passing on information related to the chief minister to his handlers in Kashmir. The arrest is being described as having foiled the conspiracy in time.
An earlier attack on the CM's close aide
This is not the first time a threat against Suvendu Adhikari has surfaced. In May 2026, his personal assistant (PA), Chandranath Rath, was shot dead. An eyewitness in the case said the attackers fired two rounds at the spot. The investigation also found that before the shooting, a car carrying some youths from Bihar had blocked the path of Chandranath Rath's vehicle, after which the attackers opened fire. During the probe, questions were raised over whether a 'Plan A' had been drawn up to target the chief minister before his oath ceremony, one that ultimately failed.
A fake email used to try to frame a woman
Another controversy involving Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had also come to light, in which someone sent a fake email threatening his life in an attempt to frame a woman. However, a police investigation exposed the plot and the truth came out.
Political developments continue
Separately, a political development linked to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also surfaced. After an FIR was filed in a hate speech case, TMC MLA Firhad was seen sharing the stage with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, which triggered discussion in political circles.
