The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued its seasonal forecast for the second half of the monsoon, predicting below-normal rainfall across the country during August and September. While unexpected weather formations over the Bay of Bengal provided crucial hydration during July and substantially narrowed the seasonal rain deficit, persistent El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean now threaten to weaken monsoon activity in the coming weeks. This potential slowdown poses fresh challenges for agricultural operations as the nationwide Kharif cropping season enters a vital growth phase.
How Bay of Bengal Weather Systems Rescued July Rainfall
At the conclusion of June, India faced a daunting monsoon rainfall deficit of 35 percent, sparking widespread anxiety among farmers and water resource managers. However, atmospheric conditions over the Bay of Bengal shifted dramatically at the beginning of July. Although low-pressure areas and cyclonic systems developing in the Bay of Bengal often bring destructive weather to coastal states, the meteorological developments this July proved to be an invaluable boon for the subcontinent. A series of four consecutive low-pressure systems formed in rapid succession, generating widespread and consistent rainfall across a vast belt stretching from Odisha to Gujarat.
According to official weather data, low-pressure systems influenced the country's weather patterns for 24 days during July, well above the historical monthly average of approximately 13.5 days. The month was characterized by two extended spells of heavy precipitation: the first occurred during the opening week of July, and the second commenced after July 22. Together, these persistent rainfall events delivered much-needed moisture to central and western India, dramatically cutting the cumulative rainfall deficit from 35 percent at the end of June to nearly 13 percent by the close of July.
Major Relief for Kharif Crop Sowing and Agricultural Sector
The timely rainfall in July delivered maximum benefits to rain-fed agricultural belts in central India, where farmers rely directly on monsoon precipitation rather than canal irrigation. The severe rain deficit in June had delayed crop planting schedules, leaving the total sown area lagging significantly behind previous years. As of July 3, the acreage deficit for Kharif crops stood at approximately 21 percent compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, causing serious concern regarding potential crop yields.
However, the sustained rain throughout July spurred rapid progress in field operations. By July 31, intensive planting efforts had reduced the acreage deficit to roughly 3 percent compared to the prior year. This substantial recovery bolstered farming sentiment and ensured adequate soil moisture for key crops such as paddy, pulses, oilseeds, and cotton during their initial establishment stage. Nonetheless, agricultural experts emphasize that final crop yields will depend heavily on the distribution and volume of rain received during the remainder of the season.
IMD Warning and El Nino Threat for August and September
Addressing the outlook for the remainder of the monsoon, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra cautioned that overall rainfall across India during August and September is expected to remain below normal. The primary factor behind this subdued outlook is the continuing presence of El Nino in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. El Nino involves the abnormal warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific, a phenomenon that historically disrupts global weather patterns and weakens the Indian summer monsoon by suppressing convective activity.
Mrutyunjay Mohapatra noted that while the national aggregate rainfall is projected to fall short of normal levels, spatial distribution will vary across different geographical zones. According to IMD forecasts, peninsular India, central India, northern regions of northwest India, and select pockets of northeast India may experience normal to above-normal precipitation. However, reduced rainfall in other agricultural zones could depress the national average, necessitating prudent water management strategies and careful monitoring by agricultural authorities.
