A severe road accident in Karnataka's Kolar district resulted in the death of a 16-year-old student and left two others injured on Independence Day. The three first-year Pre-University (PU) students were riding a two-wheeler to a nearby temple after participating in Independence Day celebrations at their college. En route, a speeding private bus collided with their vehicle. Emergency medical teams rushed the surviving students to nearby hospitals, while authorities launched an investigation into the fatal collision. Separately, another major crash in Jharkhand's Latehar district claimed six lives on the same day.
Fatal Collision Following Independence Day Celebrations in Kolar
The tragedy took place on the Chintamani-Bengaluru Road near Katmachanahalli Gate. All three victims were first-year PU students who had just completed Independence Day events at their college. After the functions ended, the teenagers decided to visit the Kaiwara temple on a single two-wheeler. As they proceeded along the highway, a fast-approaching private bus struck their motorcycle, throwing the students off the vehicle onto the roadway.
Details of the Victims and Medical Care
The deceased student has been identified as 16-year-old Deepika, a resident of R. Gollahalli village, who succumbed to her injuries at the spot. Her classmate Tripura, aged 16, sustained critical head trauma and was immediately transferred to NIMHANS in Bengaluru for specialized treatment. The third student, 16-year-old Smitha, suffered a bone fracture in her leg and is undergoing medical care at SNR Hospital in Kolar. Following the impact, the bus driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Chintamani Rural Police registered a formal case, initiated an investigation, and mounted a search to trace the absconding driver.
Six Dead in Separate Highway Accident in Latehar, Jharkhand
In another fatal incident reported from Jharkhand, a heavy container truck collided with an auto-rickshaw and a motorcycle in Latehar district, resulting in six casualties. The multi-vehicle collision took place between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM in the Dedh Tangwa Ghati region under the jurisdiction of the Chandwa Police Station. Chandwa Police Station Incharge Manoranjan Prasad confirmed that six individuals lost their lives in the crash.
Identification of Deceased and Police Action
According to police officials, the deceased include 40-year-old Afsari Khatoon and her 7-year-old son Asjad. The driver of the auto-rickshaw, identified as 35-year-old Ragib Khan from Lohardaga district, also lost his life in the collision. Three of the victims were local residents of Latehar, while authorities are working to establish the identities of the remaining two deceased individuals. Police recovered all six bodies from the crash site and transported them to the Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examinations as part of ongoing legal proceedings.
