The scheduled visits of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to Uttar Pradesh have been put on hold. As per the earlier itinerary, he was slated to hold an interactive session with Gen-Z youth at CCSU in Meerut on September 25, followed by another outreach event with young citizens in Varanasi on September 28. The deferment comes at a time of escalating political friction over voter roll revision procedures. Addressing queries regarding the development, the Election Commission clarified that rescheduling outreach conferences is part of standard administrative functioning and similar decisions have been made in several other regions previously.
Election Commission Explains Decision to Reschedule
Responding to concerns surrounding the cancellation of the tour, the Election Commission stated that adjusting event timelines is a continuous process necessitated by diverse operational factors. The poll authority pointed out that logistical considerations such as venue accessibility, schedules of top officials, and environmental or natural elements often require calendar modifications. The commission cited earlier instances where ELC conferences faced deferment or changes in dates across Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand. It further noted that the formal decision to defer the two specific Uttar Pradesh youth conventions had already been finalized on September 21.
Opposition Launches Multi-State Protests
Concurrently, opposition factions have mounted an aggressive campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar regarding the voter list controversy. The Congress party announced nationwide protest demonstrations against the head of the poll body. Other political groups have similarly joined the agitation across multiple locations. Demonstrators staged protests outside the central office of the Election Commission in Delhi, while Left party cadres organized demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. In Bihar, members of the Rashtriya Janata Dal took to the streets to register their opposition.
Origins of the Electoral Roll Deletion Dispute
The core of the dispute traces back to concerns raised around voter deletions under the revision exercise. Disclosures indicated that two Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, had flagged apprehensions regarding voter roll exclusions and questioned the decision-making framework on 14 separate occasions over recent months.
Rebutting claims of internal operational dysfunction, the Election Commission maintained that having differing viewpoints, internal discussions, and diverse observations during deliberations is an ordinary and healthy aspect of any institutional process. The commission stressed that every formal order passed by the poll panel over the past year has been the direct outcome of unanimous consensus among all its members.
