The by-election for the Bankipur assembly seat has triggered a massive political shakeup in the state. The Bharatiya Janata Party had initially fielded Abhishek Kumar Sinha, commonly known as Abhishek Bunty, as its official candidate. He had filed his nomination on Thursday in a show of strength attended by Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and JD(U) national executive president Sanjay Jha. However, the political landscape shifted dramatically within just 24 hours. On Friday, July 10, Abhishek Bunty unexpectedly withdrew his candidacy, citing “personal reasons.” The sequence of events that followed was swift; immediately after his resignation, the BJP high command in New Delhi released an official statement through national general secretary Arun Singh, announcing Neeraj Kumar Sinha as the party's new official candidate for the Bankipur constituency. Behind this significant strategic pivot, is there truly only a personal motive, or is this the outcome of a complex political script written between Patna and Delhi?
The Fodder Scam and BJP's Apprehensions
While the official reason for Abhishek Bunty's withdrawal is pinned on family matters, political circles are linking the decision to the Bihar fodder scam connection. Sources claim that among the 75 individuals convicted by a CBI court in 2022 alongside RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav in the fodder scam, Abhishek Bunty’s father, Ravindra Prasad, was listed. Ravindra Prasad served as a manager at Magadh Medical Corporation and was sentenced to 3 years in prison in connection with the 139 crore rupee scam. The BJP leadership feared that opposition parties would weaponize this issue during the campaign, leaving the party without a coherent defense or counter-narrative.
Prashant Kishor's Influence and the Risk Factor
Political analysts argue that the Bankipur by-election is far from a standard contest. Election strategist turned politician and Jan Suraaj party founder Prashant Kishor is himself in the fray, conducting intensive door-to-door campaigning. Prashant Kishor has framed this by-election as a referendum against the NDA government. On the other hand, Abhishek Bunty was seen as a simple, grassroots, middle-class BJP worker. When Bunty filed his nomination affidavit, the opposition camp began building a narrative suggesting that the BJP considered Bankipur a stronghold and had consequently fielded a 'weak' candidate. This narrative, combined with Prashant Kishor's frequent rhetoric about the BJP fielding corrupt individuals, created a perception gap that the party leadership could not afford to ignore.
Internal Dissatisfaction and RSS Feedback
Although it is a fact that Abhishek Bunty is a dedicated BJP worker with no pending criminal cases against him, and he explicitly claimed in his affidavit that he has never been convicted, the family background involving the fodder scam raised alarm bells at the top. With an electorate of approximately 4 lakh voters, many of whom are educated and professional, the BJP leadership realized they needed a bulletproof candidate. Furthermore, internal rumblings within the local BJP cadre were visible. Bunty is considered very close to Union Minister Nityanand Navin. With this seat having become vacant after Nityanand Navin moved to the Rajya Sabha, perceptions of favoritism in ticket distribution led to dissatisfaction among other capable local claimants. Internal reports from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and party sources suggested that due to this simmering discontent, the local cadre was not campaigning with the aggression required to break the formidable encirclement created by Prashant Kishor and RJD's Rekha Gupta.
The Delhi High Command's Veto and Plan B
Notably, this major decision was not driven by provincial BJP leaders in Bihar. Sources indicate that the high command in Delhi had resolved to retain the seat at any cost, as losing a traditional party bastion would send a deeply negative political message nationwide. As soon as the leadership in Delhi sensed that the ground equations were slipping, the Central Election Committee intervened immediately. Despite the rallies and show of strength organized by Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, regional leaders had to yield to the strict stance from Delhi. Subsequently, Abhishek Bunty was guided to hold a press conference and withdraw his nomination in a respectful manner, paving the way for the party to reset its strategy with a new face.
