Diplomatic relations between India and Canada are witnessing a significant thaw, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to visit Canada on December 11 and 12. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially confirmed the dates, marking a crucial step toward restoring normalcy and enhancing economic cooperation between the two nations.
Itinerary and Key Locations
According to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Toronto and Ottawa during his upcoming trip. Furthermore, discussions are underway to consider including additional cities in the official itinerary to broaden engagement across multiple regions and sectors.
Focus on Trade and Economic Targets
The upcoming visit is seen as pivotal in reviving economic ties and boosting commercial collaboration. Both countries are actively working toward finalizing a trade agreement by the end of this year. Their stated objective is to elevate bilateral trade to an ambitious annual target of 70 billion dollars by 2030.
Recent High-Level Diplomatic Engagements
This visit comes on the heels of several high-level exchanges aimed at strengthening bilateral bonds. Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu is currently undertaking a six-day visit to India. Additionally, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand held a crucial meeting with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Background of Past Tensions
Relations between New Delhi and Ottawa had hit a low in 2023 following the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had leveled allegations regarding the potential involvement of Indian agents, claims that India categorically rejected. The diplomatic fallout led to both nations expelling six diplomats each. However, following the assumption of office by Mark Carney, both sides have placed renewed emphasis on overcoming past friction and fostering robust trade and dialogue.
