The holy month of Sawan is widely celebrated across India for devotion to Lord Shiva and the traditional Kanwar Yatra. During this period, thousands of devotees undertake arduous, long-distance journeys on foot to reach various Shiva temples. Along the way, many travelers experience severe fatigue, body aches, muscle strains, and minor injuries due to the exhausting trek. Stepping up to support these travelers in Parbatsar region of Nagaur is 29-year-old Sukharam Saran from Dhadhota village, who has emerged as a dedicated helper for the Kanwariyas. What makes his story extraordinary is that the physical hardships he endures daily are far more severe than the minor ailments faced by the pilgrims he treats.
Sukharam is himself battling a critical and life-threatening illness. Both of his kidneys have failed, and he has been undergoing regular dialysis for nearly a year. He is also required to take heavy medication consistently, with his ongoing treatment based at a hospital in Makrana. Given his medical condition, Sukharam requires strict personal care, regular rest, and continuous clinical supervision. However, despite these overwhelming personal odds, he has refused to abandon his mission of serving others.
Free Medical Aid for Kanwariyas During Sawan
As soon as the Sawan month commences, massive numbers of devotees set out carrying holy water on their shoulders toward religious sites. Over long walking routes, health issues such as foot pain, exhaustion, weakness, and physical injuries are routine occurrences. Sukharam steps in to assist these pilgrims by providing complimentary medical services right on their route. He offers these treatments completely free of charge, operating without any consultation fees or expectations of material reward in return for his selfless service.
Serving Pilgrims While Enduring Constant Pain
Sukharam's journey stands out because he has successfully prevented his debilitating illness from becoming an obstacle to humanitarian work. While hospital visits, dialysis sessions, and strict medicinal routines define his everyday existence, he dedicates his time during Sawan to helping Kanwar pilgrims. Expressing his outlook on life, Sukharam notes that whenever an individual gets an opportunity to alleviate someone else's suffering, that chance should never be missed.
Compassion Trumps Adversity
According to Sukharam, no matter how adverse or difficult life's circumstances become, if a person possesses a genuine urge to help others, a way forward can always be found. His life story serves as a profound lesson for society at large. While many individuals often use their personal troubles as an excuse to avoid helping others, Sukharam has prioritized service despite facing total kidney failure and prolonged dialysis at the young age of 29. His spirit remains unbroken, and alongside helping Kanwariyas during Sawan, he continues providing free medical assistance to ordinary people in need whenever possible.
