In the Hindu calendar, the month of Kartik is regarded as exceptionally auspicious, sacred, and fruitful among all months. This entire period is dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, and Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth. According to religious traditions, any devotee who bathes during the auspicious Brahma muhurta and worships Narayan during this sacred month attains the fulfillment of desired fruits. Along with this, blessings of happiness, prosperity, and abundance are also bestowed upon the household. It is during this very month that the Chaturmas period concludes, and on Devuthani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu awakens from four months of yogic slumber. Performing certain key duties during this holy month invokes the infinite grace of the preserver.
Significance of Tulsi Worship
The Tulsi plant is immensely dear to Lord Vishnu, and no worship or offering dedicated to him is considered complete without Tulsi leaves. The entire month of Kartik is considered prime for the service and adoration of Tulsi. Throughout this month, excluding certain special days, water should be offered to the Tulsi plant regularly in the morning hours. Following this, lighting a ghee lamp near Tulsi in the evening brings auspicious results. Doing this increases grains and wealth in the household while banishing negative energies away from the home.
Charity and Donations
Worship, chanting, penance, and charitable acts hold special religious significance during this holy month. In Kartik, individuals should donate food, wealth, clothing, and other essential items to the poor and needy according to their financial capacity. Doing so invites the special grace of Lakshmi-Narayan and ensures abundance in wealth and food grains.
Bathing During Brahma Muhurta
The practice of taking a bath during the Brahma muhurta in this sacred period is considered of utmost importance, famously known as Kartik snan. Throughout this entire month, bathing before sunrise either in a holy river or at home by mixing Gangajal in bathwater is considered immensely meritorious.
Lighting Lamps for Illumination
The ritual of Deepdan holds special prominence during the month of Kartik. Throughout this month, lamps must be lit near sacred water bodies, temple premises, beneath Peepal trees, and at the main entrance of one's home. In addition to this, placing lamps under the Peepal tree and near the Tulsi plant is also beneficial. Religious belief dictates that doing so invites light and prosperity into life while securing the blessings of ancestors. Individuals can light one or more lamps daily according to their convenience.
Worship of Lord Vishnu
During Kartik month, one must worship Lord Vishnu with a sincere heart, complete devotion, and pious sentiment. Light a lamp before Lord Vishnu during both morning and evening to complete the prayers to Narayan. Recite Vishnu Sahasranama, Vishnu Chalisa, and chant various mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Offer his favored fruits, flowers, and other ritual items with utmost reverence.
Adhering to a Sattvic Diet
Throughout the month of Kartik, only Sattvic food should be consumed. One must stay completely away from tamasic items during this period. Never consume meat, alcohol, onions, or garlic during Kartik month under any circumstance. Complete abstinence from all such tamasic substances is strongly advised.
Duration of Kartik Month
This year, the month of Kartik commenced on October 26, 2026. The conclusion of this holy month will take place on November 24 on the day of Kartik Purnima. Bathing and donating on the day of Kartik Purnima yields highly meritorious rewards.
