The Indian weightlifting contingent, which delivered an impressive performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, was felicitated in New Delhi on Monday by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who remarked that every single medal won by the athletes brought immense joy to the nation.
Contingent Medal Tally and Cash Rewards
During the prestigious multi-sport event, the Indian weightlifting team secured a total of eight medals, comprising one gold, six silver, and one bronze. Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu emerged as the sole gold-medal winner for the country. Mirabai was presented with a cash award check of thirty lakh rupees, while the silver and bronze medalists received twenty lakh rupees and ten lakh rupees respectively. Addressing the gathering during the felicitation ceremony, Mandaviya praised the dedication of the competitors.
Parliamentary Recognition and Encouragement
Highlighting the impact of their achievements, the sports minister noted that whenever an athlete clinched a medal during the competition, the feat was announced in Parliament before the day's official proceedings began. He also offered words of encouragement to those who missed out on the podium, emphasizing that an athlete never truly loses as they either win or learn from the experience.
Mirabai Chanu Focuses on the Asian Games
With her triumph in Glasgow, Mirabai secured her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, having previously finished at the top of the podium in 2018 and 2022. Speaking to reporters after the event, she expressed profound gratitude for the love and recognition she received, calling it a monumental moment for all the athletes present. Looking ahead, she revealed her immediate sporting priorities. Having competed previously in the 48kg category which has now been discontinued, she will transition to the 49kg weight class for the upcoming Asian Games.
Preparing for Future Competitions
Emphasizing the significance of the upcoming continental event, the champion weightlifter noted that capturing an Asian Games medal remains a crucial milestone as it is the only major accolade currently missing from her collection. Acknowledging the stiff competition that lies ahead, she affirmed her commitment to putting forth every ounce of effort to secure that elusive gold. Regarding the distant future, she clarified that she has not yet mapped out her strategy for the Olympic Games, preferring to keep her complete focus fixed on the Asian Games before considering subsequent milestones.
