His timing not only earned him a podium finish but also established a new national record, snapping a 44-year medal drought for India in the continental men's marathon event.
Missing Gold by Just 48 Seconds
The 28-year-old distance runner came remarkably close to the top prize, finishing only 48 seconds behind the winner. Japan's Ichitaka Yamashita claimed the gold medal by crossing the finish line ahead of Barwal, while China's Peiyu Feng registered a timing of 2 hours, 12 minutes, and 13 seconds to take home the bronze medal. With this performance, Barwal entered the record books as only the fourth Indian athlete ever to secure an Asian Games marathon medal.
India's previous marathon medal at the continental event came back in 1982 during the Delhi Asian Games, where Hosur Kukkappa Seetharam claimed a bronze medal. Prior to that, during the inaugural 1951 Asian Games in New Delhi, Chhota Singh won gold and Surat Singh Mathur earned bronze. Transition to the Full Marathon
Barwal's rapid rise in the full marathon is particularly noteworthy given that he made his competitive debut in the 42.195-kilometer distance only this year, having previously competed in 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, and half-marathons. Earlier in April, at the NN Marathon in Rotterdam, he shattered a long-standing mark by breaking Shivnath Singh's 48-year-old national record of 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 58 seconds.
Race Strategy and Background
Reflecting on his race tactics, Barwal explained that his primary objective was to secure a medal for the country rather than solely chasing timing milestones. His strategy involved remaining firmly within the lead pack up to the 39.40-kilometer mark. As the race progressed to 38.37 kilometers, only three contenders remained in front, allowing him to maintain a steady pace before making his push in the closing stages.
Hailing from the Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, Barwal comes from a humble family background. His father worked as a driver in Delhi, while his mother, Subhadra Devi, is a homemaker. In 2019, Sawan enlisted in the Indian Army alongside his brother under the sports quota, paving the way for his progression to the international stage.
