Biotech venture Enveda, which harnesses artificial intelligence to uncover novel therapeutics hidden within the natural world, has secured $311 million in a Series E financing round that elevates its valuation to $2 billion. Led by Catalio Capital Management, with backing from Iconiq and additional investors, this fresh injection of capital doubles the corporate valuation the company recorded just 12 months earlier.
Turning to Nature Instead of Scratch Synthesis
Traditional pharmaceutical pipelines often rely heavily on designing and synthesizing chemical molecules entirely from scratch in a laboratory setting. Enveda challenges this convention by operating on the principle that many of the most potent medicinal compounds already exist in plants and microscopic organisms. Viswa Colluru, formerly an early team member at Recursion Pharmaceuticals, established the company in 2019 to accelerate the identification and characterization of these natural molecules using machine learning models and computational tools.
Advancing Clinical Candidates into Human Trials
Although the pharmaceutical sector has yet to see an AI-generated molecule receive formal approval from the FDA, Enveda belongs to a growing cohort of developers successfully progressing their algorithmic discoveries into clinical trials. At present, the venture is actively evaluating multiple candidates in patient cohorts. Among its pipeline programs are an investigational therapy aimed at managing severe skin disorders and a dedicated drug candidate designed to help individuals sustain weight loss following the discontinuation of GLP-1 treatments.
