While population growth was traditionally viewed as a major challenge in India under the historic two-child messaging, shifting lifestyle preferences have led many modern couples toward having only single children or none at all. In response to a noticeable drop in its own demographic numbers, a prominent community in Gujarat has taken an unusual step to reverse this downward trend. The Kutch Kadva Patidar Samaj (KKPS) has officially introduced an incentive initiative offering a Rs 50,000 fixed deposit alongside public recognition to parents welcoming their third child.
Declining Population Triggers Discussions at Zonal Meeting
The scheme was formally deliberated during a recent South Gujarat zonal meeting of the community. Community leaders gathered at the session voiced serious distress over current family planning trends among younger members, observing that young couples are increasingly choosing to raise just one child or remain childless altogether. Community representatives cautioned that if this demographic shrinkage persists unchecked, the overall size of the community could become drastically diminished in the coming generations.
Aimed at Restoring Demographic Balance Across Generations
Organisers highlighted that the initiative is intended to counter emerging imbalances in population structure across age, caste, and religious lines while motivating younger members to embrace larger households. Explaining the motivation behind the cash incentive, Zaverilal Ramani, vice president of the KKPS South Gujarat zone, stated, “This idea came because we noticed that the youth in the community are either not having children or having only one child. Through the FD, we are encouraging them to have more children.”
South Gujarat Community Size Stands at Around 17,000
Demographic estimates shared by community representatives indicate that the KKPS population across South Gujarat currently stands at approximately 17,000 and has been experiencing a continuous downturn. By offering a Rs 50,000 fixed deposit along with public felicitation ceremonies for qualifying parents, leadership figures hope to reverse this shrinking curve and inspire more young couples across the region to actively participate in the welfare measure.
