The life of Ajay Chauhan, a resident of the Chaliswan gram sabha in Mau district, stands as a remarkable testament to resilience and unwavering grit. After losing both his arms in a severe mishap, he refused to surrender to despair, mastering unique ways to navigate daily existence. Today, he operates a mobile phone using his facial features and feet, affixes signatures with his lower limbs, and manages an electronics store to sustain his entire household. In an interview, Chauhan shared that the tragic incident occurred in Mumbai in 2007, robbing him of both upper limbs. Burdened by heavy responsibilities and a desire to live with dignity, he resolved never to beg or ask anyone for financial assistance.
Returning From Mumbai to Build a New Life in the Village
With elderly parents unable to undertake physical labor, the onus of supporting the family fell squarely on his shoulders. Utilizing the compensation money provided by the railways following the accident, he established a modest electronics shop inside a small kiosk in his native village. He previously resided in Mumbai, but losing his hands made independent living in the bustling metropolis nearly impossible, prompting his return home. Enduring prolonged struggles upon his arrival, he eventually launched the enterprise with his brother's backing. Presently, the earnings from this very shop sustain his mother, father, wife, and children.
Overcoming Adversity to Marry in 2021
Recalling the dark period following the 2007 accident, Chauhan admitted that he initially lost all hope, fearing his family line and life could never progress. However, his fortunes took a positive turn in 2021 when he got married. Subsequent children brought renewed purpose and support into his world. Although devoid of hands, his strong willpower bridges the gap. When customers arrive at his store, he retrieves items using his mouth or tucks them under his arm. For heavy merchandise, he politely asks buyers to pick up the items themselves.
Feet, Mouth, and Nose Functioning as Limbs
Recognizing that modern life is impossible without a mobile phone, Chauhan adapted remarkably. If a call arrives, he grasps the device with his mouth and answers it using his nose, executing phone operations smoothly with his nose and feet. His feet effectively serve as his hands for writing tasks and calculating bills on mobile devices. Emphasizing his resolve to live respectfully, he refused to sit idly at home or seek charity, choosing instead to convert his feet, mouth, and nose into working limbs.
Relying on Dal and Rice While Coping With Hardships
Daily routines pose specific challenges, particularly dining. He utilizes an artificial plastic hand attachment capable of holding a spoon to eat. However, he is restricted to consuming dal and rice because he cannot tear chapatis independently; he eats bread only when his wife feeds him by hand. Whenever past memories surface, tears fill his eyes, yet the weight of his responsibilities compels him to keep working tirelessly.
