In Bihar's Sitamarhi district, one family has turned medicine into something close to a household tradition. Across three generations, its members have kept choosing the same profession, and 17 of them are now working as doctors. Locally, the family is spoken of as an example rarely matched, since few households anywhere produce doctors on this scale.
The tradition traces back to Dr. Rajesh Kumar, who practiced as a general physician in Raghunathpur, Sitamarhi. He took up medicine with the intent of serving the community rather than for personal gain. Family members say it was his dedication and the example he set that pushed the following generations toward the same field. That environment at home meant the children grew up treating hard work in their studies as the key to success.
A third generation carries it forward
Today the family's third generation is extending that same tradition. Dharmendra Kumar, director of Anand Diagnostic, said that whichever child in the family puts in the effort ends up succeeding and becoming a doctor. Dharmendra Kumar himself runs a well known diagnostic centre. His younger brother, Dr. Amlendu Kumar, holds an MD in Radiology and continues to serve in that specialty. Other members of the family, including the children, have gone on to gain expertise across different branches of medicine and are playing their own roles in the profession.
An example for the wider region
Because of this family, medical service has earned a distinct reputation not just in Sitamarhi but across the state. The unbroken tradition spanning three generations shows what is possible when a family provides the right guidance, the children bring genuine dedication, and a spirit of service is passed down: an entire household can produce doctors on this scale. Local residents openly praise the family's contribution and commitment, holding it up as a lesson for the next generation of children.
