Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has put an end to ongoing speculation surrounding his presence at the convocation ceremony of the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) University of Law. He clarified that he had never accepted or agreed to the institution's invitation in the first place.
Background of the Convocation Controversy
The controversy began when a section of students voiced objections to the proposed presence of the Chief Justice as the chief guest for the convocation. The situation escalated after the Bar Council of India (BCI) intervened and initially issued a directive calling for a boycott of the graduating students involved in the protest. BCI later retracted its statement and expressed regret over the decision.
Objection to Bar Council Intervention
Following the BCI's stance, the Supreme Court sought an explanation from the council. CJI Surya Kant had expressed strong disapproval over the council's rigid measure, emphasizing that matters involving students should be handled directly and did not warrant outside escalation.
Statement Following Jodhpur Address
Hours after addressing a gathering of Vice-Chancellors from National Law Universities in Jodhpur, CJI Surya Kant stated clearly that he had never consented to NALSAR's invitation. This statement resolves the confusion surrounding his expected attendance at the university event.
