Persistent torrential rain completely washed out the opening day of the main draw at the WTA 250 Chennai Open on Monday, preventing even a single match from taking place out of the 10 scheduled fixtures. Action was initially slated to get underway at 3 pm, but persistent afternoon drizzle rapidly intensified into heavy rain, leaving the outdoor courts unplayable. Facing worsening conditions, tournament officials had no alternative but to cancel the entire day's programme.
Weather Disruptions and Strict Tour Regulations
During the disruption, WTA supervisor Sheetal Iyer explored possibilities to start at least a handful of fixtures later in the evening should the weather show any sign of clearing. Sheetal holds the distinction of being the first Indian woman to take up this supervisor role at tour level. However, deteriorating atmospheric conditions combined with strict tour protocols, which prohibit matches from commencing past 11 pm, left officials with no choice but to call off the evening session entirely.
Packed Tuesday Schedule Starting at 11 am
Following Monday's complete washout, organisers reworked the entire itinerary and moved the fixtures to Tuesday. Play is now set to commence at 11 am, featuring a bumper lineup of all 16 women's singles first-round encounters. The packed schedule means tournament authorities will have to manage court availability and player recovery tightly to keep the championship on schedule.
Severe Cyclone Murasu and Northeast Monsoon Disrupt Play
The weather interference coincides with the peak of the active northeast monsoon across the region, compounded by Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu over the west-central Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department had previously issued an orange alert for Chennai, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across the coastal belt. Murasu was tracking toward the south Andhra Pradesh coast with landfall expected early Tuesday morning. Rain disruptions are not unfamiliar to this event, as the opening two days were similarly affected by adverse weather last year.
Limited Calendar Windows Dictated Event Timing
Reflecting on the challenges of hosting during the monsoon season, tournament director Hiten Joshi pointed out that while everyone understands the weather risks in Chennai at this time of year, organizers had no viable alternative. Joshi noted that hosting the nation's premier women's tennis competition required accepting this window because no other scheduling slot was made available on the WTA calendar.
