British tennis player Harriet Dart demonstrated remarkable mental resilience to fight back from the brink of defeat and earn a place in her first WTA Tour singles final at the Guangzhou Open. The 30-year-old qualifier turned the tables against local wildcard Sun Xinran, saving multiple match points in the second set before securing a hard-fought 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 victory in just under two and a half hours. The victory marks a significant milestone in her singles career, coming after years of perseverance across the professional circuit.
Opening Set Stumbles and Double Fault Struggles
The semifinal began on difficult terms for Harriet Dart. Conceding an early break after serving a double fault on break point during her opening service game, the Briton quickly found herself trailing 3-0. Rather than allowing the teenager to run away with the opening set, Dart adjusted her tactics, taking control of rallies from the baseline and winning four consecutive service games to push ahead 5-4. However, nerves surfaced when serving for the set, resulting in two more double faults that opened the door for her opponent. Reigning US Open junior champion Sun Xinran capitalized instantly, holding her own service comfortably to 15 before securing a third break against Dart to wrap up the opening frame 7-5.
Resilience Under Pressure and a Dominant Tie-Break
The second set produced a fierce battle of momentum swings. Dart managed to seize the initiative early, securing service breaks in both the first and fifth games. Yet on both occasions, the 16-year-old Chinese wildcard fought straight back to level the score. With the match on the line, Dart was forced to serve twice just to stay in contention, staring down multiple match points against an energized home crowd. Dart had repeatedly voiced frustration to the chair umpire regarding crowd interference during play, but she channeled that tension into complete focus. Forcing a tie-break, Dart surged ahead with relentless baseline depth, dominating the tie-break 7-1 to level the match and silence the stands.
Decisive Final Set Sweep and Physical Demands
The emotional toll of squandering match points, combined with mounting physical exhaustion, visibly hindered Sun Xinran as the contest slipped into the deciding set. The teenager required a medical timeout to receive treatment on her left leg, struggling to maintain her earlier court coverage. Dart seized full control of the court dynamics, maintaining sharp concentration and dictating every rally. The British qualifier surged through the third set without surrendering a single game, claiming 28 of the 41 points contested in the decider to seal the bagel set and claim the match.
Top 100 Return Beckons Ahead of Sunday Final
While Dart has enjoyed significant success in doubles competition, reaching six WTA Tour-level doubles finals and capturing two titles, breakthrough moments in singles have demanded prolonged persistence. Having made her WTA Tour debut back in 2015 at Eastbourne, this contest was only her second career tour-level singles semifinal, following her run to the last four at the 2024 Transylvania Open. Following the emotional victory, an overwhelmed Dart expressed deep pride in turning the tide, reflecting on the long road that brought her to this breakthrough stage. Currently ranked British number five, she has already risen 14 spots to 101st in the live WTA rankings. Dart now advances to Sunday's championship match, where she will face either fourth seed Lilli Tagger or Kaitlin Quevedo, with the tournament title offering a guaranteed return inside the WTA top 100.
