Southern Railway has introduced an Executive Vistadome AC coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express to enhance the scenic travel experience for passengers travelling between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The route passes through the picturesque Sengottai-Punalur ghat section along the Western Ghats, allowing travellers to observe lush forests, rugged hills, and panoramic landscapes from inside the train. The journey also cuts across the prominent Aryankavu pass, adding significant scenic appeal to the rail transit.
Operating Schedule and Service Timeline
According to an official notification released on Sunday, the Vistadome coach is currently being introduced on a temporary basis. On the service departing from Madurai, the coach will operate from October 22, 2026, to January 15, 2027. During this window, the train will carry the Vistadome coach on four designated days every week: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
For the return journey departing from Guruvayur, the facility will be available from October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027. Out of Guruvayur, the Madurai-Guruvayur Express will run with the Vistadome coach on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. This weekly four-day pattern aligns with peak weekend travel across the interstate corridor.
Ticket Reservation and Fare Structure
Bookings for the Executive Vistadome coach have been officially opened across ticketing channels. The fare structure starts at a base price of 515 rupees for shorter travel segments. For passengers booking the entire end-to-end journey from Madurai to Guruvayur, the total fare stands at 1,875 rupees. Seats can be reserved through standard railway reservation counters as well as online booking portals.
Design Features and Tourism Focus
Vistadome coaches are engineered specifically to provide travellers with an immersive panoramic sightseeing experience. Built with expansive viewing windows and a transparent glass roof, the compartment allows passengers an unobstructed view of the surrounding terrain. This layout makes viewing mountain ridges, river valleys, and dense vegetation effortless throughout the ride.
The Sengottai-Punalur ghat corridor forms a vital and scenic link connecting Tamil Nadu and Kerala through the Western Ghats. Southern Railway stated that the primary objective of introducing this coach is to blend regular long-distance transit with nature tourism. The initiative aims to appeal directly to holidaymakers and commuters seeking a comfortable journey enriched by exterior landscape views.
