Andy Burnham is marking his first foreign trip as prime minister with a high-profile visit to Kyiv, where he will hand over technical blueprints to enable Ukraine to manufacture its own long-range missiles.
During the trip, the prime minister is scheduled to chair his initial meeting of the coalition of the willing, an international framework established by the UK and France under his predecessor, Sir Keir Starmer. In addition to defense talks, he is set to accept an award on behalf of the British public honoring the nation's steadfast support for Ukraine and participate in upcoming independence day events.
In a significant development for the ongoing war effort, his administration will announce an agreement allowing defense company MBDA to declassify vital information concerning UK components used in the long-range Scalp missile, which serves as the French equivalent of the UK's Storm Shadow.
Reaffirming Support Amid Escalating Strikes
The visit comes directly in the wake of intensifying Russian airstrikes across Ukraine over recent weeks, including a devastating strike on a shopping center on Friday that resulted in the deaths of at least 16 people.
Ahead of his arrival on Monday, Burnham delivered a strong message stating that on Ukraine's 35th anniversary of independence, the Ukrainian population should remain in absolute certainty that the UK stands beside them today and for as long as necessary. He expressed immense pride in Britain's contribution and emphasized his desire for Ukrainians to hear directly from him that London's backing will never waver, noting that Ukraine's security is fundamentally intertwined with British security.
He added that the enduring friendship between the two nations will long outlast Russia's illegal war, stressing that Moscow should harbor no doubts regarding British resolve and that the UK will refuse to back down until a just and lasting peace is achieved.
Moscow Warnings and British Resolve
The diplomatic mission unfolds against a backdrop of strict warnings from Moscow regarding the consequences of Ukraine utilizing British drones to step up attacks on Russian infrastructure. Kyiv has recently expanded its long-range offensive operations targeting facilities in Moscow and other Russian regions, including oil refineries and warehouses belonging to the country's largest online retailer, Wildberries.
The Russian embassy in the UK has accused London of deliberately escalating the crisis, warning that deeper involvement will incur a higher price. Rebutting these claims, Burnham maintained that Britain is not a fair-weather friend and remains committed during Ukraine's hour of need. When questioned about Russian threats, he reiterated that the UK's consistent policy across successive prime ministers has been to supply the means for Ukrainian self-defense, a stance that remains completely unchanged under his leadership.
