Major leadership changes are underway within the senior selection panel of Indian cricket. Ramesh Powar has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Ajit Agarkar in the high-profile role. Following Parthiv Patel stepping away from consideration, Powar is widely expected to be appointed as the selector representing the West Zone. At present, Pragyan Ojha has been managing the panel in an interim capacity. The application deadline for the senior selection panel closed on 14 October, and the Cricket Advisory Committee conducted interviews with four to five shortlisted candidates on 15 October, a group that included former India opening batsman Wasim Jaffer.
Selection Committee Interviews And Powar's Background
The advisory committee comprising Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjpe has leaned toward placing its trust in Ramesh Powar, who represented India in two Test matches and 31 One Day Internationals during his playing career. Powar also previously served as the head coach of the Indian women's national cricket team. Other former players interviewed for the senior panel position included former Baroda cricketers Connor Williams and Jacob Martin. A native of Mumbai, Powar made his international debut in 2004 under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly and played his final match in 2007 under MS Dhoni.
Junior Panel Leadership And Dodda Ganesh
Powar was initially considered for a role on the junior selection panel and was in contention to serve as its chairman before being shifted toward the senior committee setup. Consequently, the position of junior selection committee chairman is now expected to be awarded to former India fast bowler and Karnataka player Dodda Ganesh. This youth panel plays a crucial role in identifying and nurturing upcoming talent across the domestic circuit.
Increased Budget And Expanded Influence
The board has increased the overall budget allocated for the selection committee by five crore rupees. Officials have also introduced greater flexibility within the salary policy to attract former players possessing extensive international experience. In addition, discussions have grown regarding the expanding influence and involvement of VVS Laxman in the broader selection framework.
Context Behind Agarkar's Departure
During the tenure of the previous chief selector Ajit Agarkar, the national team secured victories in the 2024 T20 World Cup, the 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2026 T20 World Cup. Despite this remarkable trophy run, his tenure was not extended. Reports indicate that differences emerged because Agarkar was reportedly not in favor of featuring Rohit Sharma in the upcoming ODI World Cup, leading to friction with board officials and fellow selectors.
