A new chapter is unfolding for the Mumbai Indians franchise as Mahela Jayawardene steps down from his role after nearly a decade of a long and successful association. With this departure, the franchise has accelerated the search for a successor, and an official announcement regarding the new head coach is expected in the coming days ahead of the IPL 2027 auction.
According to sources, the owners have finalized a five-member shortlist for the upcoming coaching assignment, with the interview process slated to begin on Sunday. Two prominent Australian names feature in this five-man shortlist, including former Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey. Alongside Hussey, the contenders in the race include Aaron Finch, Adrian Birrell, Mark Boucher, and Eoin Morgan, each bringing distinct attributes that make them strong candidates for the prestigious position.
Widely known as Mr. Cricket, Michael Hussey is considered one of the frontrunners in this contest, backed by his extensive nine-year coaching stint with the Chennai franchise. His calm and methodical demeanor provides great stability to players during high-pressure situations. His profound understanding of Indian pitches, local conditions, and opposition strategies serves as a massive asset for any leading franchise.
The second major Australian inclusion on the list is Aaron Finch, who led Australia to championship glory as captain in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Finch has repeatedly demonstrated his tactical vision and ability to deliver under intense pressure. Having played for multiple different teams across the league, he possesses an intimate familiarity with the tournament environment and Indian conditions.
The name of former England captain Eoin Morgan has also generated significant discussion in this race, having revolutionized England's limited-overs cricket culture through his aggressive and data-driven philosophy. This approach aligns seamlessly with the high-octane brand of cricket associated with the Mumbai Indians. Recognized as one of the sharpest modern tactical minds, Morgan excels in handling matchups, resource management, and situational strategies. Furthermore, his experience in managing a team full of star players could prove instrumental in handling the Mumbai Indians dressing room, which features tier-one stars like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav.
The shortlist also includes Mark Boucher, who served as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians from 2023 to 2024, guiding the team to a playoff appearance in 2023. However, his previous tenure drew considerable attention due to internal tensions and friction within the team when Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as captain in 2024.
Adrian Birrell is the only name on the list who comes from a non-player background in the context of the league. Despite this, he remains a highly respected and technically proficient coach with extensive experience working alongside international teams such as Ireland and South Africa. Birrell boasts a stellar track record of establishing team discipline, building a solid structure, and grooming raw talent.
