Refining the App Interface and Listening to Users
Sonos is fully aware that mentioning a new Sonos app might immediately evoke anxiety among its user community. Sid Patel, vice president of software at Sonos, notes that when saying that phrase aloud, he knows precisely what thoughts come to mind for everyday consumers. Patel explains that the application was engineered using a customer-centric feedback listening approach, which involved actively reaching out to the user community and participating directly in online forums such as Reddit.
To make the software significantly easier to navigate, the updated app introduces improved tab navigation, enhanced room sorting capabilities, and modifications to the on-screen volume controls. Furthermore, scheduled for release in the fall, Sonos plans to introduce system health views designed to help users diagnose network connection problems for each individual product in their ecosystem.
Sonos 27voice and Customizable AI Agents
The standout feature of this release is Sonos 27voice, the brand's native generative AI integration currently rolling out in early access. This tool enables users to interact verbally with their speakers in a manner similar to Amazon Alexa or Google Home devices, permitting music requests based entirely on current moods. Hardware Compatibility and Older Device Limitations
When questioned regarding which specific products would support Sonos 27 and its associated AI capabilities, a company representative clarified via email that Sonos 27 will function exclusively within the S2 app environment and will not support the legacy S1 app used to manage older generation hardware. Consequently, owners of older Sonos equipment will lack access to these advanced AI features.
The representative explained that Sonos 27 is intentionally built to leverage newer hardware capabilities, meaning not every product will support every new software addition. They expressed a desire to remain transparent regarding these technical limitations while continuing to support older hardware products with security patches and ongoing updates for as long as the physical components allow. Despite stated efforts toward transparency, Sonos announced it will withhold specific details concerning product compatibility and upgrade paths until a later date.
Sonos Fabric and Room-to-Room Portable Surround
Sonos utilizes an official designation for the proprietary network technology that allows its products to synchronize smoothly across multiple rooms, known as Sonos Fabric. Patel describes Sonos Fabric as the underlying magic that established the foundation of what Sonos was built upon, revolving around the concept of how single, double, or multiple speakers can magically coordinate within a home theater configuration, bonded pair, or multiroom group.
Two innovative features are arriving for this freshly branded technology. The first is portable surround, which allows users to physically move devices from one room to another and have them synchronize automatically in the new location. For instance, if a homeowner has a primary soundbar stationed by the television but wishes to bring in auxiliary speakers from other rooms to function as temporary surround sound channels for movie night, the Sonos products can automatically detect their physical location and moderate audio distribution accordingly.
The second addition is the capability to transfer audio seamlessly between speakers and headphones, a feature officially designated as Headphone Linking.
Sonos Ace Ultra Headphones with Extended Battery Life
The initial pair of over-ear headphones from Sonos debuted in 2024, colliding directly with the height of the company's application software difficulties. While the Sonos Ace headphones were widely praised for their audio quality, a major drawback was their inability to integrate natively within the broader Sonos speaker ecosystem. Sonos aims to rectify this limitation with its successor model, the Sonos Ace Ultra.
The new headset boasts an impressive 35 hours of battery life and supports device connectivity via USB-C and 3.5mm audio jacks. More importantly, it interfaces directly with other Sonos speakers over Wi-Fi. Because the Ace Ultra operates on Sonos Fabric technology, it bridges smoothly with the wider household system, enabling users to switch audio playback back and forth between standalone speakers and the headphones.
Patel highlights the ease of use, stating that with a single push of a button, users will be able to suck music directly into their headphones.
Beam Ultra Soundbar and AI Speech Enhancement
Alongside the headphones, Sonos introduced a brand-new soundbar named the Beam Ultra. Serving as an upgraded iteration of the existing Sonos Beam, this unit houses nine audio drivers, representing four more than previous Beam generations. These include upward-firing drivers designed to bounce sound waves off the ceiling to deliver enhanced acoustic performance. Furthermore, the Beam Ultra features integrated AI capabilities, such as AI speech enhancement, which seeks to make spoken dialogue significantly more distinguishable during high-volume cinematic scenes.
