Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries has widened the international footprint of its marquee streaming service, JioHotstar, by launching across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in collaboration with Starzplay. The digital video platform, which boasts a massive user base of more than 500 million monthly active users in its home territory of India, is leaning on one of the region's top streaming providers for distribution. This strategic expansion follows the brand's overseas entry into the United Kingdom, Canada, and Singapore.
Distribution Model and Dedicated Content Hub
Announced on Tuesday, the agreement establishes an exclusive, dedicated destination for JioHotstar directly inside Starzplay's mobile applications and web platform. Subscribers will gain access to an expansive library featuring Indian feature films, episodic television series, exclusive originals, and unscripted reality franchises spanning multiple regional languages. This rollout strategy marks a clear operational shift from the platform's overseas debut across the UK, Canada, and Singapore back in September, where the company replaced the legacy Hotstar brand and arrived as an independent, standalone direct-to-consumer application.
Targeting the South Asian Diaspora with Multi-Language Slate
The geographic move forms an integral pillar of Reliance's drive to transform its domestic entertainment giant into an internationally recognized streaming force. The MENA territory hosts one of the largest South Asian diaspora communities anywhere in the world, presenting a lucrative and ready audience for Indian-language content. New original productions from JioHotstar will premiere across the region simultaneously with their domestic Indian debuts. Viewers will have access to localized audio tracks in up to 10 languages, with programming available in Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali, alongside marquee reality hits such as Bigg Boss and talk show Koffee with Karan. Furthermore, programming executives are placing extra emphasis on Malayalam content to cater specifically to the large Malayali community settled across the Gulf states.
Subscription Pricing and Sports Exclusions
Mirroring the distribution terms established in the UK, Canada, and Singapore, the proprietary sports portfolio that JioHotstar controls domestically in India will not carry over into the MENA catalogue. Instead, viewers looking for live sporting events can choose an integrated tier. A bundled subscription pairing JioHotstar with Starzplay's dedicated sports package, which includes live cricket tournaments, has been set at AED 49.99 (approximately $13.60) per month. For general entertainment consumers, access is also available through the Starzplay Plus monthly package priced at AED 34.99 (around $9.50).
Corporate Origins and Platform Footprint
The foundation of JioHotstar stems from an $8.5 billion joint venture finalized in 2024 between Reliance Industries and Disney, which consolidated their respective media assets across India. That merger unified JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar into a single powerhouse, formally rolling out domestically in February of last year. Hotstar content had maintained a presence in the Middle East even before this unified launch. Disney Star widened its existing licensing pact in 2024 with evision, the media division of telecom group e&, establishing it as the official regional distributor for Hotstar Specials. With evision also serving as a major shareholder within Starzplay, the arrangement opened the door for JioHotstar's first branded streaming hub in the market.
Starzplay currently commands a subscriber base exceeding 2.3 million accounts, having cultivated strong ties with South Asian viewers largely through its live cricket broadcasts. While the companies kept the precise financial details of the alliance confidential, Starzplay chief executive Maaz Sheikh characterized the arrival of JioHotstar on his platform as an important strategic investment.
