Food delivery platform DoorDash is making restaurant ordering as simple as texting a friend. The company announced on Wednesday that it is rolling out an AI-powered text-to-order agent that lets customers place their meals directly through Apple Messages. With this conversational capability, customers can send natural prompts like asking the assistant to reorder their regular meal, and the smart agent instantly recognizes that they mean their recurring Friday night selection.
Smart Recommendations and Complex Group Meals
Beyond repeating past orders, customers can ask for specific dishes or request recommendations for top dining spots nearby. The conversational assistant searches local eateries, suggests an assembled cart tailored to the request, and can even text back photos of the dishes it suggests. When managing orders for a group of people, the assistant is capable of processing mixed dietary needs alongside varying item quantities within a single unified checkout.
Gaining Ground on Delivery Rivals Alongside Drone Testing
By debuting an AI agent for meal ordering, the company is positioning itself ahead of key competitors Uber Eats and Grubhub. This rollout fits into a broader technology trend toward personal AI agents designed to handle everyday errands without forcing customers to click through apps or browse websites manually. Customers across the United States can now join a waitlist to test the messaging tool. Alongside the software launch, DoorDash also announced plans to begin testing its delivery drones with select restaurant partners located in Northern California.
