A major maritime disaster unfolded off the coast of North Cyprus when a ferry carrying roughly 270 passengers and crew members capsized into the sea, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals. The catamaran-style vessel had departed from the port of Kyrenia in North Cyprus and was headed toward the port of Tasucu in Turkey's Mersin province before the accident occurred.

The accident took place on Sunday, August 30, 2026, creating immediate panic in the open waters. The overloaded ferry suddenly overturned, plunging dozens of people into the sea.
