A devastating natural calamity in Nepal has brought flourishing communities to a complete standstill, leaving several settlements wiped out within hours. Trishuli Bazar, a once-vibrant commercial landmark located in the Nuwakot district, now stands desolate and submerged in wreckage. The flash floods hit long-settled Indian merchants hard, destroying decades of built assets. Textile businessman Ashok Kumar Chaurasia has emerged as one of the most heartbreaking faces of this destruction, going from owning a multi-crore enterprise to wearing borrowed clothes and struggling for a single meal.
Four Decades of Dedicated Work Destroyed in Moments
Ashok Kumar Chaurasia originally hails from the Rasra area in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. He had been residing and conducting his business operations in Nepal for over 44 years. For the last 20 years, his primary establishments were located in Trishuli Bazar. He was recognized across the Nuwakot district as one of the premier wholesale cloth merchants. However, the sudden surge of water completely laid waste to more than four decades of continuous hard work, resilience, and wealth building within a short span of time.
A Rapid Surge Covered 100 Kilometres in 20 Minutes
Reliving the horrific sequence of events, Ashok explained that he had opened his establishment early in the morning as usual. Soon after, local police officials arrived at the marketplace to issue an urgent warning about rapidly rising river levels upstream. Taking immediate heed of the police notice, Ashok rushed back home to wake his wife and children in an attempt to evacuate them toward safer higher ground. But the oncoming torrent moved with terrifying velocity, travelling nearly 100 kilometres from Shapur Basis to Trishuli Bazar in roughly 20 minutes, leaving residents with virtually no time to secure belongings.
Over 45 Crore Rupees Lost Alongside Family Tragedy
The raging floodwaters destroyed all four of Ashok's retail shops, four large warehouses, a Maruti car, and a scooter. According to his personal estimates, the financial magnitude of the physical destruction exceeds 45 crore rupees. Far worse than the immense economic loss was the emotional devastation inflicted upon his household, as the floods claimed the lives of two family members, specifically his sister-in-law and his nephew.
Over 60 Indian Families Left Stripped of Essentials
The tragedy left Ashok, who previously managed high-value commercial inventories, without even 100 rupees in his pocket to purchase food immediately following the surge. Out of the four surviving members of his immediate group, two have been sent back home to India for safety. Trishuli Bazar accommodated over 60 Indian families who had been operating businesses there for decades. Today, the entire marketplace is littered with fractured structures, damaged homes, and ruined shop fronts, leaving once-prosperous businessmen dependent on external aid for basic necessities.
