After the US military attacked three Iranian oil tankers and publicly released footage of the operation, Iran launched a direct counter-offensive. The aerospace force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it fired multiple ballistic missiles targeting a United States aircraft carrier and an accompanying destroyer. According to the IRGC, these warships were actively harassing Iranian vessels and participating in a naval blockade against the Islamic Republic.

According to reports from Iran's state broadcaster, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), the missile strike was executed in response to persistent aggressive maneuvers against Iranian shipping. The IRIB report cited an official statement from the IRGC stating that its aerospace force launched ballistic missiles at the US military vessels. The statement further claimed that facing structural damage and fearing subsequent strikes, both American warships were forced to flee the combat zone.
Renewed Regional Military Tensions
This latest escalation comes amid a severe flare-up in regional tensions driven by reciprocal attacks on oil tankers and vessels linked to opposing powers. Prior to this engagement, the IRGC navy stated it had targeted three oil tankers transiting through unauthorized routes in the Strait of Hormuz alongside three other US-linked vessels in different sectors. The Iranian naval command maintained that these actions were direct retaliatory measures for the initial American strikes that damaged three Iranian oil tankers.
IRGC Issues Strict Navigation Warning
As detailed by IRIB, the IRGC navy issued a strongly worded statement condemning what it described as a brutal act by American forces attempting to enforce restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. The military asserted that retaliatory strikes were executed immediately following the assault on the Iranian tankers. Concurrently, the Iranian military warned all commercial and maritime operators in and around the Strait of Hormuz to avoid navigating through waters that authorities have designated as unauthorized.
