Nepal is currently grappling with a catastrophic flood disaster that has left absolute devastation in its wake. The death toll from the calamity has now surpassed one thousand, while nearly four thousand people remain unaccounted for. As rescue operations press forward, the death toll continues to rise steadily, compounding the grief across the region. Amidst this massive destruction, intensely heartbreaking accounts are emerging from survivors who witnessed their loved ones being swallowed by the rushing waters in a matter of seconds, leaving their lives completely shattered.
A Pilgrimage Turned Deadly
One such harrowing tale of survival and loss was shared by Badri Prasad Devkota. He, along with his wife and 34 other passengers, had boarded a bus heading towards the revered Hindu pilgrimage site of Gosaikunda located in Nepal's Rasuwa district. They had embarked on the journey with deep faith and anticipation, unaware of the lurking danger ahead. It was during this trip that a destructive flash flood struck the region, turning a routine journey into a nightmare.
Badri Prasad Devkota recounted that their bus was moving at a high speed when he spotted a massive, mud-filled wall of floodwater rushing directly toward them. In that moment of absolute panic, his wife was holding tightly onto his hand. He urged her to jump off the bus immediately to save their lives, but she refused to leap and instead pleaded with him not to jump. He tried to convince her that the floodwaters would submerge the vehicle and they would perish, but she remained adamant. Realizing the imminent danger, he finally pulled his hand away from hers and leaped out of the moving vehicle.
The Horrific Moment of Submersion
Devkota recalled that when he exited the bus, the floodwaters of the Bhote Koshi River in Nuwakot's Bhaise area were flowing with ferocious intensity. The sheer force of the current swept him into a drainage channel, where he managed to grab hold of some vegetation on a hillside and narrowly escaped death. Right before his eyes, however, the very bus carrying his wife was engulfed and dragged down by the raging floodwaters.
According to reports, authorities have managed to recover only two bodies from this specific group, while the remaining 28 individuals, including Devkota's wife, remain missing. Devkota continues to search for any sign of his wife, though given how the bus sank into the depths, the chances of her survival are extremely bleak. Nevertheless, if she were to somehow return safely, it would truly feel nothing short of a miracle.
This disaster follows other grim discoveries in the region, such as the recovery of 21 bodies from a single room, where a small child was found clutching her mother, alongside two additional bodies discovered outside the house.
The overall humanitarian crisis continues to expand across the Himalayan nation. Official updates confirm that the death toll from the floods has risen to 1,003 confirmed fatalities, with approximately 4,000 people still listed as missing.
