Nepal Floods Toll Rises to 962 As 23 Bodies Recovered From Debris in Nuwakot

The death toll from catastrophic floods in Nepal has climbed to 962, with over 4,000 people still missing, after search teams discovered 23 bodies buried inside a collapsed building in the Nuwakot district.

The devastating floods wreaking havoc across Nepal continue to unleash unprecedented destruction, pushing the official death toll to 962 while more than 4,000 individuals remain unaccounted for. Amid ongoing rescue efforts, panic gripped the worst-hit Nuwakot district after search teams pulled 23 bodies out from the debris of a collapsed residential building. The three-story house, located in the Betrawati village under the Bidur municipality, had been completely buried beneath heavy silt and mud brought down by the overflowing Bhote Koshi river, and authorities suspect that all the victims were pilgrims.

Ongoing Identification Efforts and Rescue Challenges

A police officer involved in the search and rescue operations stated that recovery teams found 21 bodies trapped inside a single room while two additional bodies were retrieved from the outside. On August 26, massive floods surging through the Bhote Koshi and into the Trishuli river had overwhelmed the three-story structure. Police believe that as floodwaters rushed in, occupants moved up toward the upper floors in a desperate bid to survive, only to be engulfed by the rising deluge. The recovered bodies remain unidentified, though authorities strongly suspect they belong to pilgrims.

Seeking Shelter on Upper Floors As Waters Rose

Nuwakot SP Bipin Regmi stated that 21 bodies were discovered in one room and two outside, noting that one body appears to belong to a foreign national. Bags were also found alongside the remains, leading officials to believe the victims could be travelers headed toward Gosaikunda. He explained that as the water level surged, occupants seemingly retreated to the highest level of the house to escape the onslaught. According to SP Regmi, the bodies were located inside a room directly beneath the roof, including the heart-wrenching discovery of a woman's body tightly clutching a young girl, strongly suggesting they were a mother and daughter.

He added that the victims appeared to have gathered in one spot seeking refuge from the floodwaters before the entire structure collapsed under the weight of the debris. Out of the 23 bodies recovered from the house, eight have been transported to Trishuli Hospital, while the remaining bodies stayed on the rooftop awaiting transport.
