On August 11, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi held a direct meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. This followed his meeting with Prime Minister Tariq Rahman in Dhaka just a day earlier on August 10. If finalized, this will mark Tariq Rahman's first official trip to India since assuming the prime ministership in February.
Extradition Demands and Recent Diplomatic Friction
The proposed visit holds significant weight following recent diplomatic tensions between the two neighbors. Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resided in India since being ousted in 2024 following student-led demonstrations. A formal statement released by the Bangladesh Prime Minister's Office expressed hope that India will expedite the extradition process concerning Sheikh Hasina.
India Clarifies Stance on Media Event
Tensions surfaced after Sheikh Hasina delivered a virtual address at a press conference organized by the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia in New Delhi on August 5, marking the second anniversary of her removal from power. Dhaka registered a strong protest regarding the event. In response, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that the gathering was hosted by a private media entity, reiterating that New Delhi had no involvement in the event and did not endorse the views expressed during the briefing.
