Interstate movement between Assam and Meghalaya has hit a major standstill following a total blockade of the key Byrnihat-Jorabat road stretch from both directions on Friday. In light of the escalating ground situation, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi district has issued an urgent public travel advisory. Commuters planning journeys between Shillong and Guwahati, particularly those attempting to reach medical facilities, railway stations, airports, and other essential service destinations, are advised to re-route their travel plans and avoid the blocked highway sector until normal traffic conditions are restored.
Alternate Routes for Guwahati and Shillong Commuters
To facilitate essential transit and mitigate passenger distress, the district administration of Ri Bhoi has designated specific diversionary corridors. Travelers proceeding from Shillong, Nongpoh, and Byrnihat toward the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport and railway terminals in Guwahati have been directed to navigate via either the Byrnihat-Pillingkata-Killing alignment or the Nongpoh-Patharkhmah-Rani stretch. Conversely, passengers travelling in the opposite direction, moving from Guwahati airport or railway stations toward Shillong, are advised to take the Basistha-Pillingkata-Killing route or the Rani-Patharkhmah-Mairang corridor.
Local administrative officials have repeatedly urged all highway users to steer completely clear of the Jorabat-Byrnihat road from both the Assam and Meghalaya entry points. Authorities have asked passengers to exercise full cooperation with security personnel on the ground, plan their transit timings well in advance, and utilize only the specified alternate paths to ensure smooth passage for emergency vehicles.
Border Disruption and Taxi Service Suspensions
The highway deadlock worsened as transport operators and taxi unions based in Assam initiated retaliatory actions at the border. Assam-based commercial workers began stopping Meghalaya-registered vehicles near Jorabat and the neighboring Khanapara junction. This action left dozens of passengers stranded along the border and completely disrupted inter-state commercial transport between Guwahati and Shillong.
Compounding the transit crisis, the Meghalaya taxi drivers' association formally announced an immediate suspension of all commercial taxi operations plying the Shillong-Guwahati route. Representatives of the association cited recent physical assaults on Assam tourists and violent incidents in Shillong as the core reason for stopping services. The body further cautioned that if local authorities fail to bring the security situation under control swiftly, commercial taxi services operating from Assam into Meghalaya could face similar long-term suspensions.
Background of the August 19 Shillong Violence
The current interstate standoff stems directly from violent flare-ups recorded in Shillong on August 19 during a motorcycle rally organized by the Khasi Students' Union (KSU). Participants in the black-flag demonstration allegedly targeted and vandalized several private and commercial vehicles carrying Assam registration plates. Reports of physical aggression against tourists visiting from Assam sparked widespread indignation among commercial vehicle owners, driver unions, and residents across Assam, triggering the counter-blockade at Jorabat and prompting the administration's emergency travel advisory.
