With the holy month of Sawan underway and major festivals like Rakshabandhan and Durga Puja approaching, railway passengers across the Bundelkhand region are bracing for severe travel challenges. The annual festive season traditionally brings a massive surge in passenger movement across passenger and express train routes. However, this year the situation has turned especially critical for commuters traveling along the key Bina-Sagar-Damoh-Katni railway section, where passenger services remain heavily constrained.
Six Years of Unrestored Train Services
The core of the problem stems from the continuous suspension of nine major passenger and express trains on the Bina-Katni rail line. These services were initially halted during the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Even after a gap of nearly six years, these services have not been restored to their regular schedules. Rail Sudhar Sangharsh Samiti President Ravi Soni highlighted that while train services on several other railway routes across the country were gradually brought back to normal operation after pandemic restrictions eased, this crucial Bundelkhand track has been continually neglected. The committee has alleged regional discrimination in the restoration of train services, pointing out that local commuters continue to suffer administrative apathy.
Overcrowding and Rising Private Transport Costs
The non-operation of these train services has hit daily commuters, students, and low-wage laborers the hardest. Private passenger bus operators on these routes have reportedly increased their ticket prices by nearly two times. Facing double bus fares, low-income travelers, patients seeking medical care, and students are left with no choice but to rely on railways for affordable transport. As a direct result, the few running trains are crammed beyond capacity. Passengers are frequently seen risking their lives by hanging from coach doors and squeezed into overflowing general compartments.

Severe Local Impact on Rural Commuters
The suspension of local passenger trains like the 51603/51604 Bina-Katni Passenger has hit rural communities particularly hard. Small railway stations along the track no longer have adequate train halts, forcing village residents to spend heavily on private road transport for routine needs such as employment, small trading, medical treatment, and schooling. Transport activists emphasize that restoration of these local passenger trains would offer immediate relief to thousands of regional commuters during the peak festival rush.
Railway Administration Standard Response
Addressing the ongoing public grievances, West Central Railway (WCR) CPRO Harshit Shrivastava stated that most train services across the zone have already been restored. He mentioned that special trains are being operated by the railway authorities to manage the heavy festival rush of passengers. Regarding the specific suspended trains on the Bina-Katni line, the official stated that decisions regarding their re-operation will be taken directly by the Railway Ministry.
