A catastrophic highway accident claimed three lives and left two individuals battling critical injuries in Assam’s Nagaon district on Thursday. The tragedy unfolded when a speeding passenger vehicle veered off its path and slammed violently into a streetlight pole positioned along the road divider. The sheer impact immediately ignited a blaze, trapping occupants inside the vehicle before they could scramble to safety, police authorities confirmed.
Lethal Impact Near Puranigudam in Nagaon
The collision took place at Kenapatty, situated in the vicinity of Puranigudam. Bearing registration number AR 01 W 5107, the vehicle was in transit toward Guwahati, having commenced its journey from Arunachal Pradesh. Preliminary findings shared by police personnel indicate that the person behind the wheel lost steering control, sending the automobile directly into the illumination post erected in the middle of the roadway.
The violent crash triggered an intense fire that enveloped the chassis within seconds. Three passengers sustained extensive burn trauma and perished at the scene of the incident. Two survivors, identified by officials as Vikas Kumar and Sonu Kumar, suffered severe trauma and burn injuries.
Rescue Efforts and Critical Medical Care
Upon witnessing the massive crash and subsequent flames, local residents dashed to the spot alongside emergency responders. The blaze was eventually contained, and the remains of the three deceased were retrieved from the charred wreckage of the car.
Both Vikas Kumar and Sonu Kumar were promptly transported to a nearby medical facility for emergency first aid. Given the precarious nature of their injuries, medical attendants transferred them to an advanced hospital in Guwahati, where their medical conditions remain critical.
Vehicle Ownership and Passenger Background
Officials revealed that the vehicle belonged to Vikas Kumar, while Sonu Kumar was reportedly operating the steering wheel at the moment of impact. The travellers were understood to hail from Bihar. According to initial enquiries, the three individuals who died had boarded the vehicle somewhere midway along the route between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
Investigating officers are coordinating efforts to trace their families, determine their identities, and ascertain the exact location where they were picked up during the trip.
