Law enforcement authorities in Assam have successfully apprehended and pushed back 28 undocumented migrants from the Sribhumi district. The operation was formally announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday, highlighting the administration's aggressive ongoing efforts to crack down on unlawful border crossings and infiltration.
Stance Against Unlawful Infiltration
Detailing the operation on X, the Chief Minister stated that the state's tolerance for unauthorized entry has officially run out. He noted that the individuals were identified by the local police force and subsequently removed from the territory. Emphasizing the government's resolve, he added that the mission will continue with absolute determination, ensuring zero compromise on border integrity, regional security, and the distinct identity of Assam.
Geographical Context of Sribhumi
Situated in the southern region of Assam, Sribhumi was previously known as Karimganj before undergoing an official renaming in November 2024. The district shares an international land boundary with the Sylhet division of Bangladesh, placing it among four districts in the state that border the neighbouring nation. The remaining three border districts comprise Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, and Cachar.
Legal Framework Governing Expulsions
The recent expulsions were executed under the provisions of the Immigrants Expulsion from Assam Act of 1950. Back in September 2025, the state cabinet greenlit a standard operating procedure linked to this legislation, effectively empowering district commissioners to issue formal deportation directives against persons verified as foreign nationals.
Broader Border Enforcement Efforts
Assam has actively maintained border pushback operations since May 2025, with multiple similar drives reportedly executed during nighttime hours. The Chief Minister routinely utilizes digital platforms to update the public on these security measures. Prior to this event, roughly 36 suspected Bangladeshi nationals were detained last week at a ferry ghat in Dhubri after local law enforcement intercepted a vessel carrying around 120 passengers originating from South Salmara-Mankachar. In an earlier separate sweep, more than 20 suspected foreign nationals were picked up from various hotels and railway stations located across Guwahati.
