Pulse growers across Rajasthan's Bhilwara district are facing an alarming agricultural threat this monsoon season as a widespread outbreak of Yellow Mosaic disease hits Moong and Urad crops. Commonly referred to locally as Piliya, the viral infection has begun spreading rapidly across several farming belts, putting significant stress on rural livelihoods. Agricultural authorities warn that left unchecked, the condition severely stunts plant development and halts pod formation, creating potential widespread yield failures. Farmers across the district are being urged to maintain vigilant field monitoring and act quickly at the earliest signs of infection to protect their standing harvests from disastrous loss.
Up to 60 Percent Crops Impacted and Key Disease Indicators
Reports from various locations in Bhilwara district indicate that in the worst-affected fields, 50 to 60 percent of standing crops have already suffered infection. Early identification of Yellow Mosaic disease is vital for mitigating damage. The infection initially manifests on the foliage, where distinct yellow and green patches appear across the leaves. Over time, chlorosis worsens, and the entire leaf turns completely yellow.
This loss of green chlorophyll severely impairs photosynthesis, causing plants to remain weak and stunted in growth. As the severity of the disease escalates, the plants struggle to produce flowers, and pod formation drops sharply or ceases altogether. Consequently, grain development is severely curtailed, leading directly to a dramatic reduction in final crop yield. This makes early detection and continuous monitoring essential for every farmer in the region.
The Transmission Role of Whiteflies and Weed Shelters
Explaining the epidemiology of the outbreak, Agriculture Department official Kajod Mal Gurjar highlighted that the rainy season inherently increases crop vulnerability to pest vectors. The primary culprit responsible for vectoring Yellow Mosaic Virus from plant to plant is the whitefly. As whiteflies feed on the sap of diseased plants and move onto healthy ones, they rapidly transmit the viral pathogen across entire fields. Managing whitefly populations is therefore the most critical step in containing the disease.
Furthermore, official Kajod Mal Gurjar emphasized that unmanaged weeds in and around fields compound the risk. Weeds act as natural sanctuaries and breeding grounds for whiteflies and other harmful pests, allowing pathogens to persist and thrive throughout the crop cycle. Keeping agricultural fields clean and entirely free of weeds is crucial to eliminating these pest harbors.
Recommended Management Measures and Official Guidelines
To safeguard crops against escalating damage, the Agriculture Department has issued concrete preventive guidelines for pulse farmers. Official Kajod Mal Gurjar advised farmers to conduct thorough daily or regular inspections of their Moong and Urad fields. If any plant exhibits abnormal foliage yellowing, yellow-green mosaic patterns, or stunted growth, it should be immediately uprooted and destroyed far away from the agricultural field. Removing infected plants eliminates the virus source and prevents further spread to healthy crops.
Additionally, farmers should apply department-recommended chemical sprays or insecticides to keep whitefly populations under control. Fields must also be kept entirely free of weeds, and farmers noticing persistent symptoms are encouraged to consult local agricultural extension officers immediately for tailored guidance.
