Crackdown on corruption and abuse of power within the police administration has intensified in Bihar's Gopalganj district following the exposure of an extortion racket operating out of a local police station. Authorities arrested four individuals, including the former Station House Officer (SHO), two department personnel, and an alleged middleman, for illegally detaining innocent citizens and extorting money from them. The decisive action initiated by Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinay Tiwari resulted in all four accused being sent to jail, triggering widespread discussion across the district's administrative circles.
Formal Complaint Triggers Probe by Senior Officers
The incident came to light on August 16 when SP Vinay Tiwari received a formal complaint regarding improper practices at Jadopur police station. The grievance alleged that police personnel were unlawfully holding innocent people in custody and demanding bribes in exchange for their release. Taking immediate note of the serious allegations, SP Tiwari directed the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Headquarters to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the matter and submit a detailed report on the conduct of the station staff.
Details of Illegal Detention and Money Extorted
The subsequent inquiry conducted by the DSP Headquarters uncovered severe irregularities in how the station was operating. The investigation established that Jitan Ram, Vijay Ram, and Shankar Ram, along with a woman and her minor daughter, were kept under illegal detention inside the police station premises for approximately 36 hours without any registered First Information Report (FIR) or legal authorization.
According to the findings, the detained individuals were threatened with being framed in false criminal cases unless they complied with monetary demands. The accused extorted ₹50,000 under the threat of prosecution. Furthermore, an additional amount of ₹75,000 was collected to secure the release of the woman and her minor daughter. The probe also revealed that a sum of ₹55,000 was taken under the pretext of removing specific names from case records.
Attempts to Intimidate Witnesses and Subsequent Arrests
During the course of the investigation, evidence emerged indicating that efforts were being made to threaten and influence witnesses to tamper with the probe. Responding to these developments, authorities registered a criminal case designated as Jadopur Police Station Case No. 185/2026.
Following the registration of the case, law enforcement officers acted swiftly to arrest former SHO Anil Ram, Chowkidar Raju Yadav, driver and constable Rakesh Kumar, and alleged middleman Mahanth Kumar Yadav. After completing mandatory legal formalities, all four accused were produced before the court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
Departmental Commitment to Accountability and Rule of Law
Following the arrests, Gopalganj SP Vinay Tiwari reiterated a strict warning regarding discipline and ethics within the force. He emphasized that unlawful detention, extortion, or any violation of statutory laws by police personnel would face zero tolerance. He affirmed that strict disciplinary and legal action will continue against anyone abusing official authority, adding that further legal proceedings and investigation into the entire matter remain ongoing.
