If you are a fan of Hindi cinema's golden era, you have likely heard the iconic track from the 1973 film Abhimaan. Released over 53 years ago, this song, which was picturized on Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, remains a cornerstone of Indian film music. The film was helmed by the renowned director Hrishikesh Mukherjee. While he originally envisioned Kishore Kumar lending his voice to the film's songs, things took an unexpected turn regarding one specific track.
The intersection of film and reality
The plot of Abhimaan revolves around the personal and professional lives of two singers. It is often noted that the story was partially inspired by the real-life struggles of Kishore Kumar and his first wife, Ruma Guha Thakurta. However, Kishore Kumar was initially unaware of these parallels. As a result, he happily recorded two major songs for the film: 'Meet Na Mila Re Man Ka' and 'Tere Mere Milan Ki Yeh Raina'.
Why Kishore Kumar stepped back
As the production progressed to the third song, Kishore Kumar began to realize that Jaya Bachchan's character was heavily modeled after Ruma Guha Thakurta. He felt uncomfortable with the idea that the film's narrative was echoing the difficult chapters of his own life. Furthermore, he took issue with the context of the duet song. The script required the male singer to lose a musical competition against his female counterpart. For Kishore Kumar, the idea of being portrayed as inferior to the female singer in a duet was something he could not accept.
Mohammad Rafi steps in
The film tells the tale of an established singer who marries a rising talent, only to become frustrated as her career begins to overshadow his, leading to rifts in their relationship. In a specific scene, when the couple performs on stage, David delivers a line of dialogue stating that Uma (played by Jaya Bachchan) is singing better than Subir Kumar (played by Amitabh Bachchan). Kishore Kumar requested that Hrishikesh Mukherjee remove this scene, but the director refused to alter his vision. Consequently, Kishore Kumar turned down the song.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee then approached Mohammad Rafi, who graciously agreed to record the track. He had no objections to the scene or the accompanying dialogue. Despite several well-wishers advising Mohammad Rafi against singing 'Teri Bindiya Re', he followed his own judgment. When he recorded the song, the results left everyone stunned. Penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by S.D. Burman, the song ultimately became a massive hit. Although the film featured many other tracks, this one stood out for its unique charm and emotional resonance.
Legacy and supporting cast
The film Abhimaan featured several prominent actors alongside Amitabh and Jaya, including Durga Khote, Asrani, and Bindu Desai. Decades later, 'Teri Bindiya Re' continues to captivate audiences, serving as a testament to the fact that brilliant artistry and professional decisions can create timeless magic in cinema.
