When people think of the legendary Kapur family in Hindi cinema, iconic names like Raj Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, and Ranbir Kapoor instantly come to mind. However, this illustrious lineage also included Rajeev Kapoor, an artist who never quite attained the widespread cinematic success that was anticipated for him. As the youngest son of the legendary showman Raj Kapoor, Rajeev entered the silver screen, stepped into a leading role in his father's directorial venture, and scored a major triumph, yet his acting journey failed to maintain its momentum in the long run.
Born in Mumbai on August 25, 1962, Rajeev was affectionately known by the nickname Chimpu among his family members and close circles. A different dimension of his life was documented by his older brother Rishi Kapoor in an autobiography titled Khullam Khulla: Rishi Kapoor Uncensored. According to Rishi's account in the book, Rajeev possessed a wide array of innate talents and was actually regarded by him as the most talented among the three Kapoor brothers, yet he somehow failed to fully harness his profound potential.
Rishi noted in his memoir that Rajeev possessed a deep and natural inclination toward music. Despite never receiving any formal musical training, he could play the piano exceptionally well. Furthermore, he possessed a keen eye for shaping narratives behind the camera and harbored strong editing skills. When Rishi produced the film Aa Ab Laut Chalen, Rajeev stepped in to assist with the film's editing process. Rishi firmly believed that had Rajeev chosen to make editing his primary professional focus, he could have achieved extraordinary heights in that field.
Throughout his career, Rajeev took on roles in several cinematic projects, including Aasman, Lover Boy, and Zabardast. He also expanded his footprint into production and direction. In the year 1991, he produced the movie Henna, which was directed by his brother Randhir Kapoor. Later, in 1996, he directed Prem Granth, although the film did not achieve significant commercial success. He also produced the television serial Vansh and backed the 1999 release Aa Ab Laut Chalen, which was directed by Rishi Kapoor.
Rajeev's career-defining breakthrough arrived in 1985 with the blockbuster Ram Teri Ganga Maili. Serving as the final directorial project of his father Raj Kapoor, the film featured Rajeev in the central role and turned out to be a massive commercial triumph at the box office. Despite this stellar achievement, he struggled to secure consistent subsequent hits through repeated endeavors and gradually stepped away from the movie industry. Rajeev Kapoor passed away on February 9, 2021, at the age of 58.
