Political friction has intensified in Maharashtra surrounding the rights and welfare of tribal students. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to the social media platform X to draw the attention of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis toward a pressing administrative and social issue. He highlighted that numerous tribal students across the state have been staging a hunger strike for over ten days to secure their rightful demands. This development has brought administrative apathy and student safety into sharp focus, sparking widespread discussions across political and public circles.
Voices From The Chhatron Ki Goonj Event
During a recent event titled 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' held in Pune, several female students came forward to voice their grievances regarding the hardships and discrimination they face daily. They shared their harrowing experiences on stage, detailing the distressing environment prevailing within educational institutions and residential facilities. Their accounts pointed toward archaic, restrictive, and derogatory regulations enforced within hostels that severely hamper their academic pursuits. Notably, a student named Nisha attended the gathering and courageously took the stage despite suffering from a fever, sharing the struggles of her peers with the wider public and demonstrating the unwavering resolve of the nation's youth.
Hostel Regulations And Safety Concerns
Among the primary grievances raised by the student community, residential facilities have emerged as a major point of contention. The protesting students revealed that hostels lack adequate safety measures and provide substandard living conditions. Furthermore, an arbitrary and unnecessary upper age limit of 30 years has been imposed for hostel residency, shutting out many deserving candidates. Frustrated by these rigid and humiliating policies, tribal students in Manjari have been on an indefinite hunger strike for more than ten days. They asserted that they are not asking for favors or charity, but are merely demanding their fundamental rights, emphasizing that education, dignity, safe housing, and respect are not mere privileges.
