Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, who is currently gearing up for the release of his upcoming movie 'Haiwan', found himself at the center of a lighthearted moment during a recent promotional event. As several top film personalities face scrutiny over their association with pan masala endorsements, a reporter's clever remark brought a burst of laughter from the actor. The moment highlighted how Akshay Kumar managed to navigate a sensitive industry topic while keeping the mood cheerful.
Acer vs Kesar: Humor at the Promotional Event
During the media interaction for 'Haiwan', a reporter humorously pointed out that while certain Bollywood celebrities were busy endorsing 'Kesar' (referring to the popular tagline of a pan masala brand), Akshay Kumar was busy selling 'Acer'. The cheeky comparison immediately triggered a warm laugh from the actor, who opted not to dive into the deeper controversy surrounding his peers.
When the reporter pressed further, jokingly asking whether his wife also advises him to stick to Acer products, Akshay Kumar delivered a quick-witted response. "If you know my wife, explaining things to her is not easy," he quipped. He cheekily added that whatever explanation was offered at the venue, he would now have to go home and explain it in even greater detail to his wife. The humorous exchange drew loud cheers and applause from the audience in attendance.
FDA Notices and Surrogate Advertising Allegations
The broader controversy erupted after the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued show-cause notices on August 11 to actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff. The authority granted all three stars a 15-day deadline to respond to the queries raised. The Food Safety Department alleged that the commercial for Vimal Elaichi functions as surrogate or indirect advertising for Vimal Pan Masala, a product currently banned under state regulations in Maharashtra.
The official notices were dispatched to Shah Rukh Khan's Bandra residence 'Mannat', Ajay Devgn's home in Juhu, and the official address of Tiger Shroff Productions LLP. The FDA specifically questioned the prominent placement of the Vimal brand name, explicit product references, and key dialogue cues within the advertisement, stating that such creative elements effectively promote the prohibited pan masala brand.
Akshay Kumar's Past Association and Public Apology
Interestingly, Akshay Kumar himself was once associated with the same brand's promotional campaign. However, following intense public backlash and disappointment expressed by his fanbase, the actor took swift action to distance himself from the endorsement. Acknowledging the strong reactions, he issued a formal public apology across social media platforms to announce his exit.
In his statement, Akshay Kumar emphasized that he has never supported tobacco consumption and would never do so in the future. He shared that he deeply respected the sentiments of his well-wishers who felt let down by his appearance in the Vimal Elaichi campaign. With utmost humility, he announced his decision to step back and declared that the entire endorsement fee earned from the deal would be donated toward a noble cause.
The actor further clarified that due to existing legal contracts, the advertisement might continue to air for a specific binding period. Nevertheless, he gave a firm commitment to his fans that he would exercise extreme caution when choosing future brand endorsements, expressing hope that his audience would continue to bless him with their love and support.
