Amid escalating public demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll tampering, actor Anupam Kher has come out in firm support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sharing a video statement on his Instagram account while touring the United States and Canada with his theatrical production 'Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane', the veteran performer addressed the intense political climate. While explicitly defending every citizen's democratic right to question the government and disagree with leadership decisions, Kher emphasized that dissent must never descend into vulgar abuse, personal attacks, or street violence.
Respecting Voices Supporting the Government
In his video message, Anupam Kher pointed out that democratic discourse must be a two-way street. If citizens and artists who support demonstrations are given the space to express their disagreement freely, those who stand with the elected administration have an equal right to articulate their perspective without facing intimidation. According to Kher, staying true to one's conscience is far more vital than seeking popularity among peers. He clarified that he has no objections to citizens questioning policies or holding the Prime Minister accountable, provided that the criticism remains constructive and avoids derogatory language.
Objections to Personal Attacks on the Prime Minister
Kher expressed deep dismay over vulgar slurs allegedly directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his mother during recent protests. He also raised serious concerns regarding alleged misconduct toward law enforcement personnel on duty, especially female police officers. While peaceful protest is a legitimate constitutional exercise, Kher remarked that infringing upon human dignity in the name of political agitation crosses an unacceptable line.
The actor also addressed the disparaging use of terms such as 'chaiwala' to mock the Prime Minister's humble origins. He argued that coming from an ordinary working-class family or having sold tea in earlier years is an honorable background rather than a point of ridicule. Drawing a parallel to his own roots, Kher proudly mentioned that his father worked as a modest clerk in the Forest Department. He attributed his entire career and personal achievements to his father's blessings and work ethic, stating that humble beginnings should always be celebrated.
Demand for Evidence and Constitutional Redress
Addressing the allegations of voter fraud and criticism directed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Kher appealed to critics to produce verifiable facts. He urged aggrieved parties to pursue constitutional and judicial avenues to demand accountability and transparent investigations rather than leveling unproven assertions. Kher affirmed his faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's governance based on the administration's performance over the preceding 12 years, adding that the sentiments of millions of citizens who trust the Prime Minister must also be respected.
According to the actor, suspicion alone cannot establish wrongdoing, and any claim regarding election manipulation must rest on concrete documentation. He observed that those seeking to unseat the current government must persuade the electorate and secure their mandate through the ballot box rather than relying on unsubstantiated rhetoric.
Unfazed by Social Media Labeling and Trolling
Acknowledging that taking an open stance invites severe backlash across online platforms, Kher stated that labels like 'andhbhakt' or 'dalal' do not intimidate him into silence. He maintained that creative colleagues across the film fraternity need not share identical political alignments. Just as performers who endorse ongoing protests are free to champion their beliefs, individuals with alternative perspectives must retain the space to speak candidly.
Reflecting on his arduous journey in Hindi cinema, Kher recalled sleeping on railway platforms while seeking acting opportunities. During that difficult phase, his grandfather shared a lasting piece of wisdom: 'A drenched man does not fear the rain.' The actor noted that this lesson continues to anchor his resolve against online hostility. His message emphasized that while healthy debate is indispensable to democracy, public dialogue must be grounded in facts, logic, and mutual dignity rather than vitriol.
