He was 57 years old. The artist, known for his exceptional visual storytelling and masterful camera work, had been battling a serious illness for an extended period before breathing his last on Friday. His sudden departure has left the Tamil film industry and the wider Indian cinematic landscape in mourning. Transitioning from Engineering to the Lens
Born in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, the journey of R. Chezhiyan into the world of cinema is quite compelling. Initially, he had completed an engineering degree and was expected to pursue a career within that technical field. However, his deep-seated passion for photography steered him toward the arts. Deciding to turn his hobby into a profession, he chose cinematography, and he quickly established a significant reputation in the industry through his distinct visual style. His precision and artistic eye brought a unique sense of vitality to every film he worked on.
From Cinematography to Directorial Success
Throughout his illustrious career, Chezhiyan worked as a cinematographer on several critically acclaimed films, including 'Paradesi', 'Kondral Paavam', 'Joker', and 'Thenmerku Paruvakaatru'. After mastering the craft behind the camera, he ventured into the field of direction. He made his directorial debut in 2017 with the film 'To Let'. This debut project was a massive success, earning him a National Award for 'Best Feature Film', a rare and commendable achievement for a debutant.
Reflecting Reality Through 'To Let'
Directed by R. Chezhiyan, 'To Let' featured actors such as Dharun Bala, Sheela Rajkumar, Ravi Subramanian, and Aadira Pandilakshmi in lead roles. The narrative focused on the struggles of a three-member middle-class family who are forced to look for a new rental home after receiving an ultimatum from their landlady to vacate their current residence.
