Starring opposite Rajiv Kapoor, Mandakini delivered a memorable performance that catapulted her to overnight stardom. The film contained certain dramatic and visual sequences that were considered quite bold by the standard cinematic norms of Bollywood during that era. The pairing of Mandakini and Rajiv Kapoor gained immense popularity, transforming the movie into one of the biggest blockbusters of its time. Following her explosive debut, Mandakini continued to sign major projects across the industry. In 1988, she starred in the high-energy action drama Jeete Hain Shaan Se. However, after Love Story achieved massive box office success, reports indicated that Kumar Gaurav preferred not to pair with new heroines at that stage. As a direct consequence of this shift, Mandakini lost the opportunity to play the lead heroine opposite him in the movie.
