Making her return to the silver screen after an eight-year break, Bollywood star Preity Zinta has looked back at an unusual controversy that once compelled her to initiate legal steps against major tech platforms. A lighthearted nickname coined on a film set gradually spiraled into widespread internet misinformation, eventually cementing itself on search engines and online knowledge repositories as supposed historical fact. The actress, widely recognized as the dimpled star of Hindi cinema, recently made her comeback alongside Sunny Deol in the cinematic project Partition 1947.
The Origin of the Set Prank
The origins of the misunderstanding date back to the production of the feature Soldier, in which Preity Zinta starred opposite Bobby Deol. During filming, the two performers formed a close camaraderie. Bobby Deol frequently remarked on her spirited demeanor by telling her she was just like one of the boys, which eventually prompted him to casually address her as Pritam. Before long, fellow co-star Rani Mukerji adopted the same moniker to tease her. Because the label annoyed Zinta, Deol continued the playful ribbing even further, to the extent that he continues using the nickname for her to this day.
Escalation to Legal Action Against Major Search Platforms
What began as off-camera banter between colleagues soon leaked into public discussions and gained unintended credibility. Television broadcasts and entertainment write-ups began routinely compiling lists of Bollywood celebrities who had adopted stage pseudonyms, regularly including Zinta with the unverified claim that her birth name was Pritam Singh. The rumor gathered so much momentum online that major digital databases, including Wikipedia and Google, ended up publishing the claim that Pritam Singh Zinta had formally altered her identity to Preity Zinta.
Faced with an entrenched factual falsehood that directly misrepresented her identity across the internet, the actress felt she had no alternative but to instruct her legal representatives. Official legal notices were formally served to both Google and Wikipedia demanding the removal and correction of the inaccurate claims, re-establishing on the public record that her actual, legal name has always been simply Preity.
Affection for a Longtime Colleague
Despite the legal headache sparked by the rumor, Zinta maintains deep personal fondness for Bobby Deol. Reflecting on their friendship, she emphasized that he remains one of the warmest, kindest, and most grounded individuals she has encountered throughout her life. She noted that his simplicity and genuine warmth have remained entirely unchanged over the decades.
Current Screen Projects and Personal Milestones
Alongside Partition 1947 with Sunny Deol, Zinta recently featured in the action-comedy Vibe, directed by Kunal Kemmu. In addition to directing, Kunal Kemmu shares screen space in the film alongside Sparsh Shrivastav and Vanshika Dheer in pivotal parts.
Outside her professional commitments, Zinta married American financial analyst Gene Goodenough in Los Angeles in 2016. In 2021, the couple expanded their family through surrogacy, welcoming twins whom they named Jai Zinta Goodenough and Gia Zinta Goodenough.
